Burnley look to overcome their disappointment at the weekend as they welcome a rampant Manchester City side. Pep Guardiola’s men are on a fine run of form and look to be marching towards a third title in four seasons. Anything other than a defeat will suit Burnley but Sean Dyche’s men have already taken points off some of the best sides in the league this season.Read more
Burnley have won three and lost three of their last six in the Premier League. The Clarets lost to Chelsea at the weekend but are still riding high after beating Liverpool a few weeks back. It’s been nothing but wins for Manchester City in recent weeks. The 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday was their 12th successive victory in all competitions.
Manchester City have an excellent record in this fixture. It was 5-0 to the hosts when Burnley travelled to the Etihad Stadium back in November. That was their 11th win in their last 12 meetings with Burnley in all competitions. The Clarets last beat City back in 2015 when George Boyd grabbed the game’s only goal.
Burnley have certainly recovered from their woeful start to the season. Sean Dyche’s men have done well in recent weeks, picking up a string of impressive results. The 1-0 victory over Liverpool was, of course, the highlight. They became the first visiting side to beat the Reds in a Premier League match since 2017.
A lot of that is down to their defensive solidity. Sean Dyche’s men are a difficult team to score against and have a remarkable number of clean sheets with seven in total. That’s a lot for a side that hasn’t been higher than 15th in the Premier League table since the opening gameweek of the season.
That defensive solidity is something these clubs have in common. If Manchester City win the Premier League title this season then they’ll owe a lot of their success to their defence. The Citizens have conceded the fewest number of goals and have the highest number of clean sheets with 12. Seven of those eight clean sheets have come in their last eight matches, a remarkable run for the team.
But with such solid defences at both ends of the pitch, this may not be the most exciting match of the game week. Burnley have the lowest average number of total match goals in the Premier League by some distance this season. There has been an average of just 1.95 total match goals in their 20 fixtures thus far. City’s tally isn’t much higher at 2.50. That’s in stark contrast to recent years in which Pep Guardiola’s men have had amongst the highest figures in the league.
So it’s no surprise to see that Manchester City are the big favourites to win this match. Pep Guardiola’s men are just 1/4 to secure the three points and to extend their winning streak to 13 matches in all competitions. A draw is 6/1 and Burnley are way out at 14/1 to get their first win over City since 2015. A Burnley win or a draw double chance is just 7/2 if you expect City to drop points.
But the table-toppers are the big favourites for a reason. They’re on a seemingly-unstoppable run of form and they have an excellent record against the Clarets. Their defensive record has been excellent lately and Burnley struggle to score goals. City are 1/1 to win this match to nil.
If they do then the match may well be over before the break. City have the best first-half record in the Premier League by some distance with 44 points from 20 matches. Burnley have the fourth-worst record in the league before the halftime break. It’s 4/6 for City to lead at halftime or 6/4 for a first-half Asian handicap of Manchester City -1.
When City play Burnley, they do tend to win by a high margin. Guardiola’s men have won six of their last seven matches with Burnley by a margin of three or more goals. Four of those seven matches finished 5-0 to City. It’s 25/1 for City to win this one 5-0 which seems like a good punt.
