Finland Veikkausliiga Fixtures
The Finnish Veikkausliiga has an untraditional format with some similarities to the standard leagues. Namely, there are only 12 clubs in the Veikkausliiga, which play in a round-robin format, playing each club twice. The number of clubs has varied throughout history, but the 12 clubs rule started in 2020.
After the round-robin, where each team faces all others twice, once at home and once away, the group splits. The top six teams go into the Championship Group, while the bottom six go into the Challenge Group. Both groups play a single series round of five games.
After completing these five additional games, the first team in the Championship Group is crowned the Champions. On the other side, the bottom team of the Challenge Group is immediately relegated to the lower league, the Ykkönen, the second tier of Finnish football. This club is replaced by the champion of the Ykkönen.
The second-worst-ranked team will have to play a playoff game but has a chance to remain in the league. Their opponent is the runners-up of the Ykkönen. The two teams will play a two-legged playoff game for a spot in the Veikkausliiga.
Another thing that is different about this league is the fact that, like other northern, cold-climate countries, the football league has a summer time frame. Specifically, the Veikkausliiga usually lasts from April to October to avoid the winter.
The champion of the league earns a spot in the Champions League qualifier. At the same time, the 2nd and 3rd spot on the table qualify for the Conference League qualifier. With that in mind, you can be certain that the competition will be ferocious.
