Check out our Africa Cup of Nations predictions, and find the absolute best advice from expert tipsters.

The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations is going to be played in host nation Cameroon between 9th January and 6 February, 2022 and will see 24 teams competing for the AFCON title. Algeria, the defending champions from 2019, will have a tough task ahead of them as Egypt and Senegal are all waiting in line to dethrone them.

The 2022 AFCON competition is already shaping up to be spectacular, and predicting the Africa Cup of Nations winner can be done with our help, so keep reading on.

AFCON Tournament Preview

In normal circumstances the tournament takes place every two odd years. Algeria won the Africa of Nations in 2019 so could be one of the Africa Cup of Nations tips. They beat Senegal in the final and that country will send a strong squad. They should be included in the AFCON predictions because they have a number of players from the English Premier League.

As part of the predictions, we now discuss the format of the tournament, the match schedule and the latest favourites and odds.

Tournament Format

The finals of the Africa Cup of Nations involves 24 countries. The hosts, Cameroon, qualified automatically so did not compete in the qualifying element of the tournament. There were 12 qualifying groups and the AFCON Qualifier winners and second placed team are eligible for the finals in Cameroon. The hosts are high in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations odds and have a good chance of winning the Cup.

There are six groups in the final, consisting of four nations who will play each other in three matches.  The two top nations in each group and the four third placed countries with the best record will progress to the first knockout stage which is the round of the last 16.

In the event of two or more teams winning the same number of points at the group stage, the qualifiers for the next round will be based on the following outcomes, in the order listed below:

  1. Points won in head-to-head group matches.
  2. Goal difference in these head-to head group matches.
  3. Total goals scored in the group head-to head matches
  4. Overall group goal difference.
  5. Overall goals scored.

The main AFCON predictions focus on the outright winner of the tournament. Senegal are worthy favourites after losing in the final to Algeria in 2019. Their main striker is Sadio Mane who plays for Liverpool in the Premier League in England. His teammate at Liverpool, Mohamed Salah, could scores the goals to take Egypt to the latter stages of the competition. In any AFCON stories you should include the hosts, Cameroon but our tip is Senegal.

Competition History

The first Africa Cup of Nations was played 64 years ago in 1957 in Sudan. It is the main national men’s football competition in Africa. Egypt became the first CAN winner, the feat they have done six more times during the competition’s history and have become the most successful national team of the competition.

The Africa Cup of Nations was initially held every two years but was switched to odd-numbered years in 2013, not to clash with the World Cup. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will be in Cameroon for the second time. Algeria is the current title holder.

Egypt is the winningest AFCON nation. The Pharaohs have lift the crown seven times and played in the finals nine times. Cameroon are the runners-up with five titles. The Indomitable Lions also have two second-place finishes.

Teams in the AFCON 2022

The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations will be the 33rd iteration of the most important tournament on the African continent. As the previous one, this edition will include 24 teams who made it through Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

Even though Cameroon is the host nation, they qualified for the tournament by topping Group F in the qualifiers. The Indomitable Lions were joined by 11 more group winners as well as 12 second-place teams from each group.

Here is how the AFCON 2022 looks like.

Group A Group B Group C Group D Group E Group F
Cameroon Senegal Morocco NIgeria Algeria Tunisia
Burkina Faso Zimbabwe Ghana Egypt Sierra Leone Mali
Ethiopia Guinea  Comoros Sudan Equatorial Guinea Mauritania
Cape Verde Malawi Gabon Guinea-Bissau Ivory Coast Gambia

All of the group winners and runner up teams will qualify for the elimination stage of the tournament. While four additional places will be determined based on the four top third-place nations.

Nigeria Preview

Nigeria qualified for the 2022 AFCON by finishing at top of Group L. They went undefeated with four wins and two draws. Napoli attacker Victor Osimhen was the top scorer of qualifiers scoring charts with five goals and he got tremendous support from Allex Iwobi (2 goals) and Samuel Chukwueze (2 goals). Players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City make Nigeria even more formidable.

The Super Eagles won the competition three times and been in the finals seven times. They also have the most third-place finishes (eight in total) out of all African teams. Most of the AFCON betting gurus point to them being one of the early favourites to win the trophy.

Ghana Preview

Black Stars got their place by topping Group C in the qualifiers. They won four, drew one, and lost one. Their lone defeat came at the hands of Sudan. Nevertheless, they got their place at the tournament where much is expected from André Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Thomas Partey as Africa Cup of Nations 2022 odds point to them being a contender, or at least dark horses of the tournaent.

Ghana won the cup four times and were runners up five times so far. They only have a single third-place finish, though.

Senegal Preview

Senegal also went undefeated in the qualifiers (four wins and two draws) as they topped group E. Famara Diedhiou scored three goals and was followed by Liverpool star attacker Sadio Mané who had two. The Lions of Teranga have never won AFCON, but their biggest achievement came at the previous 2019 iteration when they lost against Algeria in the finals.

Africa Cup of Nations prediction points to Senegal being in good shape in the tournament. Besides Mané, Senegal has a very rich talent pool of players as we expect Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea), Ismaila Sarr (Watford), Idrissa Gueye (PSG) and Abdou Diallo (PSG) to all make an appearance.

Cameroon Preview

Even though Cameroon was eventually chosen to be the host country of AFCON, they got through Group F with only a single defeat. The Indomitable Lions recorded four wins and a draw as well, which was enough to get them past Cape Verde. Vincent Aboubakar scored three times and will surely make a significant impact at the tournament as well.

Tournament hosts Cameroon are one of the best African football nations with five trophies. In fact, their most recent title came not so long ago, namely in 2017 when they defeated the favoured Egypt by 2:1. They are going to rely on the likes of Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa (Napoli), Karl Toko Ekambi (Lyon), and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (Bayern Munich) for this tournament as their Africa Cup of Nations winner odds as hosts are high.

Egypt Preview

Egypt got to the 2022 AFCON a bit harder than expected. But they still managed to finish first in group G by recording three wins and three draws. Comoros was a surprise team in Group G, but the Pharaohs still managed to beat them in the final game with two goals from Salah. Much will be expected from Liverpool’s Mo Salah in this competition and he should get support from Aston Villa’s Trézéguet and Besiktas’ Mohamed Elneny.

The Pharaohs are the winningest Africa Cup of Nations team in history. They have the most titles (7) and most appearances (25). However, when making our Africa Cup of Nations tips, we have to consider the fact that the last time Egypt won the title was in 2010.

Algeria Preview

Algeria are the reigning champions and they reached the 2022 African Cup of Nations by being the dominant side in group H. They recorded four wins and two draws without a defeat. On their road to 2022 CAN, they also scored 19 goals with two 5:0 wins (vs Zambia and vs Botswana) and won the 2021 Arab Cup.

The Fennec Foxes have a formidable squad with a group of very talented players. The likes of Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), Said Benrahma (West Ham), Sofiane Feghouli (Galatasaray), Ismaël Bennacer (AC Milan), and Baghdad Bounedjah (Al Sadd) are all set to make an appearance. Bounedjah scored the most goals in the qualifiers and is also remembered for scoring the winning goal at the 2019 African Cup of Nations against Senegal that won Algeria the title.

Morocco Preview

Morocco is another talented side that our AFCON betting predictions hold in high regard. The Atlas Lions achieved qualification by winning Group E with four wins and two draws. Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech was their most prolific goal scorer and a lot is expected from him further on. He is more than likely going to get a lot of help from Achraf Hakimi (PSG), Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla) and Munir El Haddadi (Sevilla) in the tournament.

Morocco has won the title only once in its history and it was way back in 1976. Their most recent success came in 2004 when they played the finals and lost against Tunisia by 2:1. The Atlas Lions should be in good shape, but they do need to pass Ghana in the group first.

Tunisia Preview

Tunisia qualified for 2022 AFCON with five wins in Group J. They had an easy route to the tournament and only drew at 1:1 against Tanzania. The Eagles of Carthage had three players that scored three goals in the qualifiers – Seifeddine Jaziri, Saîf-Eddine Khaoui, and Wahbi Khazri. They will have to face another favourite in Mali during the group, but it does not undermine their odds to win.

Tunisia has won the AFCON only once and it was in 2004 at home. Before that, they played the finals in 1996 but lost to South Africa. Their advantage comes from their experience as Naïm Sliti, Youssef Msakni, Ferjani Sassi, and Ali Maâloul have all been a part of the national team for a long time.

Cote D’Ivoire Preview

Cote D’Ivoire beat Ethiopia to the punch by topping group K in the qualifiers. They lost one game (2:1 vs Ethiopia) but finished with four wins, one draw, and four points clear of the runners-up Walias. Franck Kessié was their best scorer with three. Much is expected from the AC Milan midfielder as he should be joined by Sébastien Haller (Ajax), Nicolas Pepe (Arsenal), Maxwel Cornet (Burnley), Eric Bailly (Manchester United), Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) and Serge Aurier (Villarreal) for the final roster.

Interestingly enough, the Elephants won both of their titles after a spectacular penalty shootout. The first was in 1992 (11:10) and the next one came in 2015 (9:8). They also reached the finals in 2006 and 2012, but lost against Egypt in the former by 4:2 and versus Zambia 8:7 in the latter, again both times on penalties. Third time might be lucky.

Mali Preview

Mali just barely won Group A with only two points clear of second-seeded Guinea. They only lost one game against Namibia but won four and drew once. Les Aigles are a team without a clear star and play team football, which is the main reason they didn’t have a single player that scored in double figures during qualifications.

Mali has never won an African Cup of Nations title, but they played in the final once (in 1972). However, they did manage to get back-to-back third-place finishes in 2012 and 2013. Mali will rely on the likes of Adama M. Traoré (Sheriff), Hamari Traoré (Rennes), Amadou Haidara (RB Leipzig), and Moussa Djenepo (Southampton) to get them through as deep as possible.

The first thing that you can check is reliability. You need to be sure that betting with a certain operator is safe. The next thing is the odds. Since many bookmakers give action on the Africa Cup of Nations, it would be best to analyze each of their offers and choose the one that has the most value or offers the biggest odds.

Finally, we propose checking each bookmaker’s first time sign up bonus. Operators already have welcome bonuses for newly joining players.
