Newcastle v Leeds Recent Form
Newcastle are on a poor run of form. They’re at the bottom of the Premier League form table and have been knocked out of both cup competitions in the last month. Leeds have also had a tough time. They haven’t scored in any of their last three matches in all competitions and lost them all.
Newcastle v Leeds Recent Matchups
It’s a little over a month since these sides last met. Newcastle travelled to Elland Road for the Premier League return fixture back in December. The hosts won 5-2 in a memorable victory for Marcelo Bielsa’s men. That was Leeds’ first win in their last six fixtures against the Magpies including a couple of matches in the Championship.
Newcastle v Leeds Stats & Analysis
It’s been a tough few weeks for both of these sides. Newcastle, especially, have struggled since the start of December. This run has seen them plummet down the Premier League table and eliminated from both cup competitions. The absence of star winger, Allan Saint-Maximin has certainly been felt by Steve Bruce’s men. The former OGC Nice man hasn’t played a Premier League match since mid-November. Newcastle picked up an average of 1.25 Premier League points per game with Saint-Maximin in the team. They’ve managed just 0.88 points per game since then.
The issue has been goals. Newcastle just haven’t been scoring enough lately. Their goal output has dropped to just 0.44 per match since they beat West Brom at St James’ Park in early December. Their tally was at 1.71 before then in all competitions.
Leeds have also become a little goal-shy. They haven’t scored for three consecutive matches for the first time since January 2020. They haven’t gone four straight competitive matches without scoring since April 2010 back when they were in League 1.
But Marcelo Bielsa will expect his players to perform here. They showed their goalscoring ability in the return fixture against Newcastle with that thumping 5-2 win. Their massively-open style of play results in a great number of goals. They’ve got the highest average number of total match goals in the Premier League by some distance at 3.56 per game. But that approach somewhat changes on the road. Amazingly, only two clubs have kept more Premier League clean sheets away from home than Leeds have this season.
Newcastle v Leeds Bets
It’s part of the reason why Leeds are the favourites to win this one. The visitors are at 1/1 to secure the three points and put an end to their dire run of form. A draw is 3/1 and Newcastle United are also available at 3/1 to get a win. Their home record has been a lot better than their away form this season so the hosts look good value.
But Leeds have a surprisingly impressive defensive record in away matches. Marcelo Bielsa’s men have kept four clean sheets in their nine Premier League away games this season. Leeds are 11/4 to win to nil against a Newcastle side that has averaged just 0.44 goals per match in the last few months.
But this match could be opened up. That is often the case when Leeds are playing so don’t be surprised if that is the case here. Seven goals were shared in the reverse fixture just a month ago 6.5+ total match goals is out at 25/1 if you expect something similar here. Over 2.5 total match goals is far likelier at 4/5 over 3.5 at 2/1.
Patrick Bamford has scored seven goals in Leeds’ away Premier League matches this season. He’s a 6/5 anytime goalscorer but the former-Chelsea man’s last away league goal came back on the 5th of December. Instead, players like Raphina and Jack Harrison may be better options to score anytime for Leeds at 16/5 and 3/1 respectively.
