The Eerste Divisie has a traditional system of promotion and relegation. There are a total of 20 teams in the league, each playing all others two times. The first half of the season sees each club playing all others once before the winter break around Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Officially, the league kicks off around the first half of August and ends around May the following year. The current 2025/26 season, which is the 69th edition of the league, started on the 8th of August 2025 and is set to end on the 24th of April 2026. The league has an unconventional promotion and relegation system. The champions and the runners-up are immediately promoted to the higher tier, the Eredivisie. At the same time, the bottom two teams from the top league relegate to the Eerste Divisie.
However, we can potentially have a third rotation, depending on the outcome of the Nacompetitie. The Nacompetitie consists of six teams from the Eerste Divisie and the 16th-ranked club from the Eredivisie.
Clubs can qualify for the Nacompetitie by having the best record in the four periods, each encompassing eight rounds. The two remaining spots go to the highest-placed clubs that didn’t qualify earlier.
If a club qualifies for the playoffs in two periods, their spot goes to the next-best club for that period that didn’t qualify. After a knock-out competition, including the 16th-ranked Eredivisie club, only one moves into the Eredivisie.
