The Superettan is the second tier in the Swedish football system. Home to 16 clubs, teams fight it out each season to earn promotion to the top flight of Swedish football, the Allsvenskan.
The Superettan is not as popular as most of Europe’s ‘second’ divisions, with attendances a lot lower than England’s Championship or Spain’s La Liga 2, for example. However, that’s not to say that there isn’t plenty of betting opportunities on the Superettan throughout each campaign. Let’s take a look at how the Sweden Superettan works. The Superettan generally runs from April through to October. There are 16 teams who contest the league, playing a total of 30 games during the ‘regular’ season. The side that finishes top of the division after 30 games is declared Superettan Champions and awarded a place in the Allsvenskan. The team finishing in second place are also rewarded with a spot in the Swedish top flight. The side who finishes in third place enters a promotion/relegation playoff against the side who finishes in 14th place in the Allsvenskan. A two-legged affair, the winners gain a place in the Allsvenskan for the season after with the losers entering the Superettan.
The two sides who finish in the bottom two places of the Superettan table are automatically demoted to Sweden’s Division 1. The teams who finish in 13th and 14th position take part in a promotion/relegation playoff against the sides finishing as runners up in the Division 1 North and Division 1 South. Again, these playoffs are two-legged matches, with the winners of each tie awarded spots in the Superettan and the losers in Division 1 North or South.
The current Sweden Superettan Champions are Helsingborgs IF, who won the 2018 title.
