After capturing the belt from former 185 GOAT Anderson Silva, Weidman looked like he was going to remain undefeated for a long time. A run-in with Luke Rockhold would hand Weidman his first loss and he hasn’t quite managed to recover yet. Weidman is 1-4 since losing to Luke Rockhold on a December night in 2015. Whether it is mentally or physically that Weidman hasn’t recovered, I’m not sure, but his chin has definitely gotten much worse since a flying knee from Yoel Romero would open him up like a can of tuna whilst rendering him unconscious. Weidman has lost every single fight he has been in by knockout, expect for his fight against Kelvin Gastelum, where he somehow managed to survive and get a submission win. Don’t think he beat Kelvin by a landslide, however, as the Mexican had him on skates in the first round.
Weidman is primarily a grappler, but actually showed great boxing in his fight against Jacare Souza, despite being knocked out late in round three. Chris has lost two in a row since beating Gastelum in 2017.
His opponent is Russian Omari ‘Wolverine’ Akhmedov (8-3-1 in the UFC). Omari is a grappler with decent striking and likes to mix it all up in the cage. Akhmedov has fought at welterweight before (the weight class under) so I expect Weidman to have a comfortable size advantage here since Chris is big for middleweight.
While Weidman will have those aforementioned reach and height advantages, it’s tough to pick a guy who has managed to win 1 out of 6 fights in five years. Weidman just can’t compete at the top level anymore and despite numerous knockouts he still does not want to address the rising concern that the man can’t take a punch. Even after being humiliated by Dominick Reyes, he still claims that he can beat Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya. I think there’s a deeper issue with Weidman, and it’s his inability to realize that he doesn’t have what it takes anymore.
This would’ve been a good matchup for Chris back in the day, but at this point he will lose to anyone you put in front of him. I think he is entering his BJ Penn period, and I don’t mean that in a good way …
