23-year old Youssef Zalal is 2-0 in the UFC. He faces UFC debutant Peter Barrett this weekend. Zalal is as well-rounded as they come, but prefers to stay on the feet and strike with his opponents. He has gone to the judges’ scorecards in both of his UFC bouts.
Barrett is primarily a grappler, and tends to grind his way to a victory. The last time we saw Barrett was on DWCS where he had a tough fight against a game opponent. He would eventually get the nod from all three judges, but not before being badly hurt on more than one occasion in that fight. Now, he faces the biggest challenge of his career, against a young prospect like Zalal.
I think all evidence points in the direction of Zalal getting the win here. The only negative thing I can say about him is experience. He does tend to give up some dominant positions occasionally, and he’s still learning. However, I don’t think Barrett is UFC material based on his last three fights. I only give him a puncher’s chance against Zalal here, which still is quite unlikely since he isn’t a KO puncher.
I think Zalal’s odds are a bit off, but I’m still going with him for my prediction. I expect this fight to go the distance, since Zalal will be dictating the dance. Barrett is a tough cookie, though, so I see him surviving three rounds.
