As you can tell my allegiance to Burel in this spot is evident, and at +120 Pinnacle users can get the best price on the market on the first-round upset.
First of all, and excuse my French but how the hell is Anastasia Potapova being listed as the favored to begin with? Favored? Don’t you have to be playing with a semblance of confidence to be expected to win a match at a WTA1000 level event?
I get that Clara Burel is ranked 12 spots behind Potapova but Anastasia is 0 for 5 in the last five outings after reaching the semifinal in Birmingham. Potapova wasn’t even able to finish her first match at Eastbourne, and then early losses at Wimbledon, DC, and Toronto haven’t done much to provide a lift.
If there ever was a coin-flip situation this would be it, because neither player has been putting up much of a fight to get deep into tournaments. A 3-match streak here and a couple of back-to-back wins is all either can show for this campaign.
Even though the trip to Paris for the Olympics didn’t end but with one win for Burel, the experience should have the Mademoiselle in good spirits. I expect Burel to advance but let’s notice that Jasmine Paolini awaits the winner of this clash in the second round.
My coin lands on Burel to win at +120, and probably +115 depending on your book and when you get the action on the board!

Potapova was dismissed in Toronto after forcing a third set against Magda Frech only to get swept in the final frame, 6 – 0.
The trip back to the U.S. didn’t start well after the 2 & 2 loss to Taylor Townsend so the trip to North America could see an 0 – 3 record with a loss today.
Anastsia is 10 – 9 on hardcourts this season and the only title she can claim on this surface happened in Linz last year.
CLARA BUREL RECENT FORM
Burel experienced the Olympics tennis tournament and went 1 – 1 but being in Paris for 2 weeks has been inspiring for the France native. Clara needs a big finish to the 2024 campaign and she knows how it feels to lose five straight games.
Burel ended May and started June with a 5-game losing skid and she is only 9 – 7 on hardcourts this campaign. Clara was 19 – 8 in 2023 on hardcourts and largely responsible for the leap into the 50s of the rankings.
