Ashlyn Krueger vs Lulu Sun Prediction: An American Favored Again in China

Ashlyn Krueger was listed at -145 yesterday against Yafan Wang, and I will admit that I thought Wang was going to take out the American in the first round. After Wang took the first set, 6 – 3, Ashlyn mustered up the ability to win the match in three sets and I got to see how she did it.

The second set felt like it went by in a blink even though it took 50 minutes for Krueger to take a 6 – 4 frame to level the match at a set apiece. There weren’t any long service games in the second set and despite the 3 breaks of serve (2 for Krueger) they both were just getting points and holding quickly. 

The game that gave Krueger a 4 – 2 lead in the frame was a 9-point effort and there were no more than 7 points from Wang and Krueger in the set. I appreciated watching some quick service games as they each were doing well until the third when Krueger broke Wang a trio of times to earn the win. Krueger snapped off 5 aces and a 76% first-serve in the opening round vs Wang. 

While it burned my cash on the Wang offer yesterday to upset Krueger, the saying goes if you can’t beat them, join them, HA! At -2.5, I hope Ashlyn comes up with another quality effort as a favorite despite a likely match with top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka on deck at the top of Section 1.

ASHLYN KRUEGER RECENT FORM

Ashlyn Krueger is ranked 68th on the WTA Tour and is 11 – 4 in the last 15 outings. The run started in Toronto upon returning to North America and Krueger went 4 – 0 until a loss to Jess Pegula in the round of 8.

Krueger is 18 – 14 on hardcourts this season and has a 28 – 23 record in 2024. Since turning pro three years ago, Krueger has yet to produce a losing record on any surface which is impressive for the 20-year-old American youngster.

Ashlyn earned the first WTA title of her career last year in Japan and has two tourney wins at the ITF/Challenger level.

LULU SUN RECENT FORM

Lulu Sun has a shiny number 40 next to her name and that is the highest ranking she’s achieved on the WTA Tour.

Sun has five ITF/Challenger tourney trophies in her showcase three of which have been earned over the last two campaigns.

The New Zealand native is 20 – 9 on hard courts this year and has a 41 – 19 record in 2024.
