Illya Marchenko vs Raphael Collignon Best Bet: Monday, November 21st

An unfortunate end to the week at the ATP Finals, as Stefanos Tsitsipas lost from a set up, after losing under 10 points on serve in the first two sets.

As the 11-month season begins to wind down, we have just a few weeks of action remaining, with the Davis Cup and a few weeks of Challenger Tour tennis to go.

For Monday’s selection, we’ll take a look at the match between Illya Marchenko and Raphael Collignon from Andria, Italy.

Illya Marchenko vs Raphael Collignon Preview

November 21st, 9:00 UK Time

One of the most interesting matches of the day in Andria for my money, this one actually comes in the qualifying draw, with Marchenko and Collignon each being given a tough task to book their spot in the main draw.

Neither can really complain, however, as both were handed relatively easy matchups in their opening qualifying matches against a pair of Italians who you wouldn’t typically see in a Challenger event.

The veteran from Ukraine has long been known as a quick-court specialist (he’s stated many times how much he dislikes playing on slower surfaces), and should feel at home on the typically quick courts in Andria. His younger opponent, on the other hand, has much more surface versatility and has worked his tail off in 2022 to reach the top 300 in the world, now having won nearly 60 matches on the year.

The majority of his success has come on clay, but he’s made a pair of deep runs indoors at the ITF level and has taken sets off of guys like Gregoire Barrere (a really strong player on quicker surfaces at this level) and Martin Krumich (a very talented youngster from the Czech Republic).

With some decent hard-court statistics this season, I think Collignon has the ability to keep this one very close to Marchenko. He wins just about 70% of points behind his first serve, over half of the points on his second serve and holds serve over 76% of the time. Factor in that the courts are quicker and should help him find a few more free points, there’s a bit of altitude to quicken things up slightly and Marchenko not being known as a strong returner (whether that be motivation-wise or returning ability-wise), Collignon should be right in this one.

Illya Marchenko vs Raphael Collignon Best Bet

Marchenko will be the player that is more well-known in the tennis world, but the Belgian has a fairly impressive game, has worked to build a consistent form to reach this point and is on the ascent.

In what I deem to be an almost dead-even matchup, I see a bit of value here on Collignon, with the over games also looking like an intriguing position.
