Well, that match was about as on point for Timofey Skatov as you’ll see. Dreadful in one set (the first), much better start to the second set, blow break points and then have to save several break points the very next game, all to drag it out long enough to win the bet.
Onto Wednesday, where we’ll stick with the indoor event in Maia, Portugal, and preview the match between Jan Choinski and Vitaliy Sachko to wrap up the month of November on the men’s side.
In this article:
November 30th, 11:00 UK Time
As often as I enjoy talking about why a player’s record may be skewed by the really tough quality of competition or lower level of opposition, Sachko actually provides the rare instance where one’s record is a pretty apt representation of his ability and form.
His first serve can at times look really strong, but it’s never really overwhelming in terms of power. His baseline game is unorthodox, but when in form, he can really pull players around the court from the baseline. He is consistently inconsistent.
As for Choinski, it’s pretty clear what you’re going to get on any given day from the big man. Equipped with a powerful first serve and forehand combo and rare comfort on clay (his ability to play the longer points from the baseline is rather impressive for someone of his stature), the Brit is a pretty talented player and capable of playing across surfaces when healthy (a rather large caveat for him).
With any kind of conditions that could throw a wrench into Choinski’s plans to dictate neutralised by playing indoors, and Sachko’s edge in baseline consistency and comfort on clay cancelled out by the big Brit, I don’t think Choinski is quite large enough of a favourite in this market.
Between the inconsistencies in Sachko’s game, along with his lack of a real weapon and his strengths not really outshining Choinski by much, I’m happy to back Choinski here as a short favourite, when I think there’s reason to believe his true price much more expensive than it is at the moment.
Odds as at 8:35 am on November 30th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
