The second round of the Budapest Grand Prix continues as Bernarda Pera and Eva Lys square off on Thursday with a quarterfinal appearance on the line.

Bernarda Pera was on the court for close to three hours in her opening-round win against Tamara Korpatsch. It took a miraculous effort from the American native to escape with a first-round victory as Pera attempts to reach her second quarterfinal at the Budapest Grand Prix in three years including the run to the title here in 2022.

Pera (82) is listed as a -150 favorite to get past Eva Lys (129), and the German native is looking for her 12th win against opponents ranked inside the top 100 in her career.

Eva Lys plowed her way through Nadia Podoroska in the first round in Hungary, and EJ Garr’s Bernarda Pera vs Eva Lys prediction shows respect to the German. Get his handicap prediction featuring odds at -115.

Bernarda Pera vs Eva Lys Prediction: A Tight Battle in Hungary

  • Prediction: Eva Lys +3 Games Handicap
  • Best Odds: -115
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at 7:00 am UK Time on July 18, 2024.

Bernarda Pera has four career clay titles to her credit, and in 2022 she reeled off 7 straight wins to hoist the Budapest Grand Prix hardware. That experience came in handy in her first-round battle with Korpatsch because I still can’t believe the American is in the second round of this WTA250 event.

Pera was on the court for just short of three hours and her service game was all over the place. When you face 26 potential breaks of serve, that is called playing on the edge and Pera might not fare so well playing that today.

There were 17 breaks of serve in the Korptsch vs Pera clash, and no one could hold serve out of the gate as the first five games were all won with breaks. Five Games, Five Breaks! Not the best way to start a tennis match for either of them but Pera got through it while also needing to take a timeout from heat exhaustion.

It will be just as hot today as it was yesterday in Hungary, so the weather won’t be giving Pera a break on Thursday. It’s supposed to be the hottest day of the week today, so it will be interesting to see how Bernarda handles the heat again.

Lys made Nadia Podoroska look like an amateur in the first round, easing past the 71st-ranked Argentine at 3 & 0. Eva Lys is ranked 129th in the world, and she was the favorite against Podoroska but is the underdog today.

With those +3 games in my pocket on the German to cover the handicap, I have Lys to hang around and make this a competitive affair with the quarterfinals at the Budapest Grand Prix in the balance..

BERNARDA PERA RECENT FORM

Bernarda Pera was 7 – 0 in Budapest en route to the 2022 title, and this is her fourth appearance at the Grand Prix chasing a second quarterfinal showing.

Pera spent her magic lamp wishes in the first round as she faced three set points in the first frame and saved them all while going down 0 – 2 in the third set. Mounting the comeback kept Pera on the court for a long time, and she needed a break calling over Medical to deal with the heat in her first-round affair with Korpatsch.

Pera won two clay titles in 2023 at Budapest, and Hamburg and holds an 82 – 50 record on the clay since 2012. With her first-round win at the Budapest Grand Prix, she clinched a third straight campaign with double-digit wins on the dirt.

EVA LYS RECENT FORM

Eva Lys destroyed Podoroska in the first round, and the German has been victorious 11 times against opponents ranked inside the top 100.

Eva is 8 – 5 on the dirt this season, and her overall record on clay is 31 – 28 since 2020.

With a win today, Eva Lys would escape the second round of her first tournament in 2024.

PERA VS LYS HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

On any surface, this will be the first match between Bernarda Pera and Eva Lys.
