Another underdog I like on Tuesday in first-round action comes from Gstaad. There are a lot of people who will just avoid matches that feature two players who are both struggling, but I think this is a good spot for Stricker to turn things around.

For starters, the altitude in the mountain town means bigger servers and hitters will be rewarded more than in traditional clay court tournaments.

Stricker should be able to take advantage of the quicker conditions more effectively than his Dutch opponent.

Then there’s the fact that Stricker was out for a while and just returned during the grass season. Now, being gone for a long stretch with injuries is bound to affect your timing, and though he can hit with the power that should be rewarded on grass courts if your timing is off and you’re rusty, I can’t think of a worse surface to put you on than grass courts where you have very little time to prepare and hit your shots.

Finally, van de Zandschulp has struggled a lot this season and even admitted he contemplated quitting the sport as a profession at one point. A lot of that stems from his incredibly shaky backhand. Now he’s playing against a lefty with big power that can hammer away at his backhand with his big forehand in cross-court exchanges and do so in the altitude where he can rush it even more. Big matchup advantage for the young Swiss in that regard as well.

Botic van de Zandschulp Recent Form

Until last week it had been such a poor 2024 season that the former top-25 player was out of the top-100 at one point. Now, he’s back up to No. 87, but it’s still a sign of how much he’s fallen off.

The bright spot to his season came last week in Braunschweig, Germany where the 28-year-old did manage a run to the final at a higher-point 125 tournament on the Challenger circuit. Now, he struggled to get through the quarters and semis and was dispatched with relative ease in the final, but any deep run against decent opposition is surely a welcome one for him.

I’m not sure whether that is a one-off or a sign of things to come, but in altitude against someone with the firepower that Stricker has, I wouldn’t hold my breath on it being the latter.

Dominic Stricker Recent Form

As I alluded to above, it hasn’t been the smoothest return to tour for the 21-year-old. The lefty with big power had just one win from four tournaments in the grass season – the only four events he’s been able to play in the first 6.5 months of the year.

Now only two of the four losses were in straight sets, and one of those two was a two-tiebreak affair that could’ve gone either way.

He hasn’t been getting run over, but it was clear the timing was off and the quicker, lower bouncing courts that don’t afford one much time weren’t helping in that regard.

Now on a higher bounce surface that still rewards his power in the thinner air, but isn’t too quick and should give him time to set up his bigger groundstrokes, Stricker should be able to finally get back on track.

If he can ruthlessly work the rallies to the van de Zandschulp backhand, he should be in a strong position to add another loss to van de Zandschulp’s tally on the year.

Botic van de Zandschulp vs Dominic Stricker H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have clashed twice – oddly enough, both times in Antwerp in 2022 and 2023 – splitting the two meetings on quicker indoor hard courts.

In the 2022 meeting, Stricker made quick work of van de Zandschulp, while the Dutchman won in three sets last November in the rematch.
