After a stunning upset over Karolina Pliskova in the first round, Caroline Dolehide will take on Elise Mertens in the second round on Thursday at the Birmingham Classic.

Elise Mertens made quick work of Wild Card entrant Caroline Wozniacki in her opening round affair, and the line setters list her as a big favorite to advance to the quarterfinals at -400. EJ Garr’s Caroline Dolehide vs Elise Mertens prediction is on the handicap at -105, so check it out below.

Dolehide has taken this Lucky Loser spot and made the most of it, and she gets to play the underdog role again on Thursday with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

Caroline Dolehide vs Elise Mertens Prediction: Better Lucky Than A Loser

  • Prediction: Caroline Dolehide +4.5 Games Handicap
  • Best Odds: -105
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated on June 20th 2024.

Caroline Dolehide lost the first set against Pliskova, 6 – 2, and the +330 underdog looked like she was dead and buried in the first round. So much for that! I mean, when you watch tennis as much as I do it was just amazing to quite literally watch Caroline steal the momentum and reach the second round.

That second set went by in a blink, and there was only one break in favor of Dolehide that made it 4 – 2 as she went to win the frame, 6 – 3. The third set proved so much to me, and when Caroline got down 5 – 3 her back was against the wall and the fat lady was tuning it up. With Pliskova serving for the match, Dolehide somehow managed to get the set to a tie-break and then the rest of the magic happened.

Call me a homer for being American, but I was as pumped up as she was with that win, especially after getting back into the tournament because it’s better to be lucky than a loser, right!

Now I am counting on that Lucky Loser to come through for us in a big way, but I am not going to put that +320 on the board. I will go flippin’ bonkers if Caroline pulls off this upset, make no mistake about it but I am still putting the +4.5 handicap on the board.

Caroline can’t keep it close? Oh stop it, the hell she can’t! Pinnacle has +180 on the Over 2.5 Sets, and as soon as they go to the third we cash that bet along with the +4.5 on Dolehide when it’s all said and done!

I would say taking out Pliskova in three sets is some nice form to get make her way back into an event with the Lucky Loser entry. Caroline is 2 – 2 on grass this season, but her 9 – 15 record in 2024 has her ranking pushed back to 61st on the WTA Tour.

Dolehide has never had much success on grass on her career, although she has limited entries since 2017. Caroline was 0 – 2 on grass in 2022 and 0 – 3 last year bringing her overall record to 6 – 16 entering 2024.

Since 2021, Caroline is 3 – 9 on grass, and if  you recall she had to endure an 8-match losing skid on this surface from June of 2021 to her first win in qualifying here in Birmingham this week.

Mertens didn’t get much mention in this article, and I apologize to those looking for more.

Elise is 1 – 1 on grass after getting taken out of her first entry in the Netherlands by Naomi Osaka combined with her first round win over Wozniacki here in the UK.

Mertens is the 5-seed for this event. And you can currently get about +500 odds for the Belgium native to win the Birmigham title. She is third in line behind Leylah Fernandez and Anastaisa Potapova, but those two are possibly headed for a semifinal clash which would eliminate one of them before the final regardless.

This clash in Birmingham will be the first time that Dolehide and Mertens have met on any surface.
