Friday brings another action-packed day of tennis, as the BNP Paribas Open rolls on. To conclude the week’s previews, let’s look at some value coming from the WTA draw. Though I backed her personally in the opening round, I am incredibly underwhelmed by Wozniacki since she has returned to professional tennis. She still plays the underpowered, consistent, defensive game style, but she has shown she struggles to hold up physically (something you need to really play that kind of game effectively) and the ability to redirect pace that she used to have has turned into a more pure pushing style.

For my money, Vekic is the much better player, even if they’re contesting this match on a slow court. She has the rare power that should still be able to cut through the court and dictate play, and the slower courts and Wozniacki’s lack of powerful groundstrokes should actually help mask her movement issues.

Form-wise, this isn’t close either, and other than the win last round against a quick court player in Lin Zhu, there’s nothing to suggest Wozniacki should be given as good a chance to win this match as her counterpart.

Caroline Wozniacki Recent Form

After a prolonged absence from the sport, Wozniacki’s return hasn’t exactly seen her shoot back up the rankings. Sure, she had an inspiring run to the second week of the U.S. Open, but she did so against a relatively unknown Tatiana Prozorova, an erratic Petra Kvitova and a far-from-her-best Jennifer Brady (who led by a set), before Coco Gauff sent her packing.

Before that, she had been beaten fairly-handedly by both Marketa Vonrousova and Varvara Gracheva. This season has seen one win via retirement over Magda Linette and the first-round victory against Zhu. That ends the list.

Now she’s taking on a huge server who has risen back up the rankings herself in the last year, having earned a bye to the second round as a seed and currently sitting inside the top 40.

Even if Wozniacki plays her best, she’ll still need an element of Vekic underperforming to get this win.

Donna Vekic Recent Form

I’d argue that Vekic has quietly put together an incredibly strong start to her 2024 campaign.

She’s only reached one semifinal and only added one other quarterfinal to that, but she’s put together a strong record, has looked good in most matches, has a win against Aryna Sabalenka (one of only two losses on the season for the world No. 2) and has only lost to players having good seasons.

Cirstea beat her and made a semifinal, Boulter beat her and won the title, Alexandrova had to come back from a set and break down to beat her and needed a pair of tiebreaks and Pavlyuchenkova has burst back into the top 25 this year.

She has a huge serve, a big forehand, can play at net and without being rushed, and should have time to get around the court and set her shots up so she’s taking the ball in an optimal strike zone more often than not.

Caroline Wozniacki vs Donna Vekic H2H – Stat of the Match

The 33-year-old leads the series between these two 2-0, but both those matches were way back when Wozniacki was among the best players in the world.

It’s a new era now, and Vekic is currently a far better player with much bigger weapons and much better form.
