Casper Ruud vs James Duckworth Prediction: Ruud Not Strong Enough in Quicker Conditions to be Big Favourite

  • Predictions: Duckworth +1.5 sets & Duckworth to win
  • Best Odds: 2.49 & 5.00
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle & Bet365
  • Stakes: 2/10 & 1/10

Odds updated at 1:30 am UK Time on August 8th, 2024.

There is no way to make a case that Duckworth is the better player in this matchup, but it’s also tough not to take a chance at these kinds of odds. Yes, he let us down in qualifying against Mackenzie McDonald, but he entered the main draw as a lucky loser and beat what I consider to be an even tougher American hardcourt player in Marcos Giron in the opening round.

He has a decent serve and is a player who plays almost exclusively on hard and grass courts.

Ruud, on the flip side, is a clay courter through and through with some struggles in quicker conditions this year. We’ll go over his hard court form in a minute, but suffice it to say that much of the success he had was on the slowest hard courts there are on tour. Our Ruud vs Duckworth prediction is for Duckworth to cover the spread and win the match.

Casper Ruud Recent Form

The world No. 9 has already amassed 42 wins on tour this year, but 24 of them came on clay and another 10 came on the slow outdoor hard courts of Los Cabos, Acapulco, and Indian Wells.

In quicker conditions? He went 1-1 on grass, 2-1 in Miami (getting by the underpowered youngster Luca van Assche by a one-game margin of victory), and went 5-1 in Australia. In other words, three of his seven wins on quicker courts were in the first week of the season representing Norway at the United Cup, with the two in Melbourne being against an aging clay court lefty Albert Ramos Vinolas and then against Max Purcell in a fifth set super tiebreak.

I just don’t see enough dominance in these conditions to warrant this kind of respect in the betting markets.

James Duckworth Recent Form

Despite his failure to cash us a nice underdog odds bet in the second round of qualifying, Duckworth continues to perform as an underdog. He took Reilly Opelka three sets in Washington and lost in two tiebreaks to McDonald. At Wimbledon, he lost in three tiebreaks as an underdog of over 9.00. In the first round here, he looked really strong against Giron as an underdog once more.

He doesn’t have any real intimidating weapons, but he serves well and backs it up with strong aggressive play on his first ball.

I wouldn’t underestimate him in this one, especially against someone who doesn’t thrive in these conditions.
