Arthur Cazaux vs Luca van Assche Prediction: Trust More Powerful of Two Young Frenchmen

  • Prediction: Cazaux to win
  • Best Odds: 1.69
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds updated at 4:15 am UK Time on July 30th, 2024.

Neither of these youngsters is in particularly good form, but I think one has the serve and weapons from the baseline to use these conditions to his advantage far more than the other and when it comes to playing on the main tour, I’ll always side with the player more capable of playing front-foot tennis than the underpowered one.

If van Assche had more variety to his game (a slice that’s hard to attack or the ability to play loopy balls with precision into the back corners), I’d be more inclined to think he could neutralise the power that will be coming at him.

As such, I’m a firm believer that he was out of his depth after a good 2023 and start to 2024 that has allowed him to play more routinely at the main tour level.

My Cazaux vs van Assche prediction is for Cazaux to win.

Arthur Cazaux Recent Form

Hasn’t been a great few months for Cazaux after he broke out and took the tennis world by storm back in Australia. Part of that is due to injuries, part due to some tough draws in early rounds (such if the life of a player that is unseeded in ATP main draws) and part has been sloppy, error-prone play.

The latter could prove relevant (and costly) against someone as consistent as his countryman, but this is a great place for the 21-year-old to get back on track.

First, he finally seems to be healthy again. Second, these courts and conditions emulate the hot, fast conditions found in Australia where he did find success. Third, this is the most manageable first round opponent he’s had in over a month.

I thought he did well to beat another very talented player in Zizou Bergs at Wimbledon and held his own against a tough grass courter in the big-serving Alexander Bublik. Dealing with the power and athletic combination of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is also a tall task when he’s on and Cazaux nearly forced a third and deciding set in that match back in Atlanta as well.

He should have his chances to apply pressure on return here against an underpowered van Assche. The questions are whether he can play solidly from the baseline in his own service games and whether he can convert those break chances if he does manage to generate them.

Luca van Assche Recent Form

Since making the third round of the Australian Open, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the now-world No. 118.

He has a total of three wins in main draws on the main tour since the year’s first slam and has been dipping back to the Challenger Tour of late to try and regain some form and pick up a few more victories to boost his confidence.

A chance at a main draw appearance at the 500 level with so many of the top players over at the Olympic Games in Paris was too much to pass up, however, and here he is in quicker conditions where his game may be able to play with less vulnerability than it did all spring.

He nearly qualified for Wimbledon and got in as a lucky loser, but when tasked with better players (though not worldbeaters in Lucas Pouille and Fabio Foginini) he was hit off the court.

That’s what he’s at risk of having happen to him in this spot as well. Cazaux has all the firepower and it’s van Assche that is going to have to try and get creative to keep pace when it comes to racking up holds and hope his compatriot is misfiring on the regular from the baseline.

Arthur Cazaux vs Luca van Assche H2H – Stat of the Match

The younger of the two won the only meeting between these two back in 2022. That was on clay though, where the consistency of van Assche surely posed more of a threat to Cazaux. It was also in three sets and saw Cazaux wear down a bit towards the end. That may be a risk here as well, but I don’t think it’s as likely with points likely to be much shorter in length on the quicker surface.
