Wednesday saw a nice recovery from Ugo Humbert to take down Lloyd Harris, a day after looking as though he’d be eliminated himself by Constant Lestienne. While the score may look close, it was a fairly open-and-shut match, one that ended up in a loss for me.
For Friday, we stick with the event taking place in the United States and preview the match featuring Christopher Eubanks and Aleksandar Vukic.
I’m going to back these two to play out the opening set to a tiebreak. We know that these courts play rather quickly and that both these men thrive in these conditions and possess a big first serve and power-based game.
It’s been an incredible 2023 season for the big American, who has seen his one-handed backhand improve by leaps and bounds, as he’s vaulted himself into the world’s top-35 with a good chance to be in the top-30 come Monday.
Armed with a huge first serve and strong forehand, his lack of consistency and his backhand had held him back in the past. The success this year began in Miami, where the 27-year-old reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier and was in tears after one victory that locked up him reaching the top-100.
During the recent grass season, he managed to snag a title in Mallorca and followed that up with a quarterfinal run at The Championships.
Now able to put balls in play on return from his backhand side and attack weaker second serves, Eubanks has a much more well-rounded game to accompany his lethal first serve.
After his second-round victory against countryman Brandon Nakashima, he also alluded to the fact that he’s dramatically improved in the consistency department as well.
Reigning in his powerful game from the baseline was something he struggled with and he said that he’s now far better at recognising when he’s lost his rhythm and tries to hone it in and play with more margin for error until he’s back on track.
I’d say he’s doing so pretty well.
On the other side of things, we have the Aussie, whose game is very much serve and forehand based.
Through two matches, Vukic has won three-quarters of points behind that first delivery, with both opponents likely being stronger returners than the man he plays on Friday.
It isn’t the most elaborate game plan, but in the Atlanta heat and on the quicker courts, it has been very effective.
I think given the games on offer here and the conditions in Atlanta, it’s obvious that the service numbers would come to the fore.
We’ve got two players that have been dominant this week in that regard. They’ve combined to average about one ace per service game this week (considering that’s about a quarter of a service hold and doesn’t even include unreturned serves, that is a pretty impressive number). They’ve also both managed to win over 75% of their points on first serve in all four of their matches in Atlanta to this point.
