Dan Evans vs Andrea Vavassori Best Bet: Friday, April 7th

Well, that was nice stuff from Bernabe Zapata Miralles. He was able to keep things close, taking the opening set to a tiebreak, win the second to ensure that the over cruised home and then closed it out for a win in the third set. A nice comeback win for a change – and on a nice odds underdog, no less! We’ll take those and hope to keep things going.

As for the John Isner tip from days ago? It still hasn’t been completed, as they’re in the second set and being pushed another day to Friday in Houston (where there’s still a FIRST round match to be completed in a deciding set).

Let’s move on to Friday, where we have the quarterfinals taking place in Estoril and Marrakech. Today’s preview features Dan Evans and Andrea Vavassori from the tournament in Morocco.

Dan Evans vs Andrea Vavassori Preview

April 7th, 11:30 (UK Time)

A little surprised to see the initial odds movement in this matchup.

The British No. 2 is far from a clay-court savvy player, and I’m not sure what his win against a fellow hard courter in Alexei Popyrin proves.

His slice doesn’t play nearly as well on a higher bouncing surface and the movement isn’t nearly as natural. Then there’s the fact that he struggles offensively on the red dirt.

I understand that Vavassori played a rather lengthy affair on Thursday in his win over Jaume Munar, but the fact is, he’s a much more natural clay courter, has some impressive wins this week and is in pretty decent form.

Dating back a few weeks, the Italian with flashy groundstrokes and the confounding ability to successfully serve and volley on a slow surface like clay has reached the semifinal of one Challenger event, the quarterfinal of another as a qualifier and now the quarters of a 250 as a qualifier.

He has some wins over strong Challenger competition along the way, and his first and second-round victories this week have come against players that may not be ranked as highly as Evans, but for my money, are better on the clay in Munar and Nicolas Jarry.

I’m not sure that this price should have risen from the original 1.85 range well into underdog territory.

Dan Evans vs Andrea Vavassori Best Bet

My suspicion is that it’s a combination of Evans just being a tour-level regular and Vavassori not having consistently managed that yet at 27 years old and potential fatigue for the Italian.

I think at 1.85 though, plenty of that had already been considered and baked into the price.

Moving this about 40 cents on the dollar is far too much for me and I’ll happily back the clay courter in this one, albeit with a standard stake.

  • Selection: Vavassori to win
  • Best Odds: 2.24 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 3:30 am on April 7th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
