As well as Ajdukovic played last week in Sweden, this feels like a big step up in talent. Darderi has burst onto the scene playing well in tournaments just like this one.

He doesn’t yet possess the weapons to compete consistently in some of the bigger 500 and 1000 level ATP tournaments, but his heavy ball, comfort on clay and solidity combine to make him very effective at higher end Challengers and non-traditional clay 250s like this one post-Wimbledon or the February event he won in South America.

That solidity is a key point in this matchup, with Ajdukovic able to ramp up the pace on his forehand, but also being prone to stretches laden with unforced errors.

We’ll see if Darderi can exploit that matchup edge, as we’ve clearly seen a few previews go down in smoke this week with players unable to think through matches, but if he can, he should be able to advance without much fuss. My Darderi vs Ajdukovic prediction is for Darderi to cover the handicap.

Luciano Darderi Recent Form

The Italian has racked up over 30 wins on the dirt this year, with a great deal of them coming in events on the Challenger circuit with beefed up fields and main tour tournaments. From titles in Cordoba (as a qualifier) and the Perugia Challenger, to semifinal appearances in the Turin Challenger, Cagliari Challenger and Lyon, to quarterfinal runs in a few other events, including the 500 in Hamburg just last week.

It’s pretty clear the 22-year-old has some staying power at this level on the red clay and I’m not sure his opponent is there yet.

Duje Ajdukovic Recent Form

Remove last week’s run to the quarterfinals in Bastad as a qualifier, and the mercurial Ajdukovic would actually have more losses than wins this season on clay.

That to me indicates that this pricing with a handicap below four games is a bit of an overreaction to the performances he put in last week.

There’s no taking away the strong wins against Pavel Kotov and Thiago Monteiro, but other than those two wins, there wasn’t a whole lot to write home about. Even having a lead against the great Rafael Nadal doesn’t mean all that much anymore since the legend has lost a step and is a shell of his former self.

Perhaps that momentum carries over to this week, but based on his history and game style – more tangible things to evaluate – I think he’s a tad overvalued entering this clash with Darderi on Tuesday.
