While the eight qualifying matches play out on Monday to fill the main draw, the first round of the National Bank Open will begin on Tuesday and Dayana Yastremska will battle with Yulia Putintseva from Section 3 of the bottom bracket.

Putintseva has the favoritism of the line setters at -150 to reach the second round in the Ontario Capital, and in this case, I agree with them to an extent. We’re not going near that ugly price but the -3 games handicap is the direction I suggest you take to cash the ticket.

Yastremska is ranked four spots ahead of Putintseva at 28th on the WTA Tour but the Ukrainian native didn’t fare too well at the Olympics representing her nation in Paris. Dayana picked up one win over 110-ranked Pigossi at the Olympics and then Camila Osorio ended her tournament.  

Putintseva has been off for a month having last played at Wimbledon on July 8 but she did make it to the round of 8 before losing to Ostapenko in the London Major. 

The only woman I see on this court with any confidence to rely on is Yulia and I expect the Kazakh native to take this match down in straight sets. I was originally going to post the -3 handicap but the line has been moving and now I see books posting -4.

Again, I know why the line setters expect a win from Putintseva and it’s due to a month off to refresh and a down Yastremska lacking confidence.

DAYANA YASTREMSKA RECENT FORM

Yastremska has a career record of  60 -40 on clay, although most of the success was accomplished in 2017 and 2018 (25 – 10). As we’re all aware, Yastremska dealt with doping issues in 2021 but was cleared and made her return here in Hamburg that season after a six-month layoff.

Yastresmka represented Ukraine at the Paris Olympics and went 1 – 1 on the Roland Garros clay. Dayana is 5 – 5 this season on the dirt with a 21 – 15 record overall but hasn’t put together a 3-match win streak since her run to the semifinals at the Australian Open. 

YULIA PUTINTSEVA RECENT FORM

Yulia Putintseva hasn’t played tennis since the end of the grass swing in the UK, and all she did was go 8 – 1 with a run to the Birmingham title with a dash to the round of 8 at Wimbledon.

Putintseva is 9 – 4 on clay this campaign and is in position to have a winning record on all three surfaces for the first time since 2019. 

Yulia has a record 131 – 81 on clay since the 2012 campaign.
