Back-to-back winners thanks to Daria Kasatkina, who we correctly identified as having great matchup advantages. Unfortunately, nothing on Friday, as the rain in both Toronto and Montreal delayed matches finished until really late and the odds were also delayed as a result.
New week though, and it’s another big event, as the men and women play a combined event in Cincinnati in the final tuneup for all the best players for the U.S. Open!
For Monday’s tennis preview, we’ll break down Elina Svitolina vs Caroline Wozniavki from the first round of the WTA draw at the Western & Southern Open.
It was an impressive return from Wozniacki in Toronto, as she looks to get some matches in ahead of the U.S. Open, but this seems like a tough matchup for her.
Svitolina isn’t one to concede unforced errors and has the bigger and more aggressive game from the baseline.
Wozniacki may have beaten Kimberly Birrell last week, but against a decent player in Marketa Vondrousova, she did look overmatched for the majority of the proceedings.
I’ll back Svitolina here to get things done in relatively routine fashion.
Read on for more expert insights.
After a slew of early losses in her first few tournaments, the Ukrainian has been showing us why she was one of the elite players on the WTA Tour for so many years.
A title in Strasbourg, along with second week appearances at both the French Open and Wimbledon have surprised many.
It’s been primarily thanks to the addition of a more aggressive mindset to her game. She’s always had strong counterpunching abilities, consistency and strong shots from both wings, but now she’s hitting with more purpose and looking to play more first-strike tennis.
It appears as though that’s made her a more complete player.
It’s taken a really strong player more often than not to eliminate her in recent times. For me, Wozniacki simply isn’t there yet.
We only have a pair of matches to work with for the Dane in terms of form. Toronto was her first tournament back on tour since the 2020 season.
She went 1-1 as alluded to above, and still had the patented rock solid game from the baseline.
The attacking portion of her game still isn’t the strongest and with the way Svitolina has returned in her own right with a vengeance, it’s tough to see Wozniacki coming through this one.
Svitolina has enjoyed the lion’s share of the success when these two have played in the past. She leads the head-to-head 4-1. I’m not sure how relevant matches from five-plus years ago are, but considering she’s likely in a more well-tuned state on the court at present, I’d think she’s even more likely now than she was in the past to pull out the win.
Not much to compare statistically here, simply because of the aforementioned prolonged absence of Wozniacki from the tour.
That alone, however, is part of the reason to bet Svitolina here.
Odds as at 12:00 pm UK Time on August 14th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
