Olympic teammates Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk must have gotten a kick out of seeing their names land in the main draw of the National Bank Open in Toronto.

Marta Kostyuk was the last Ukrainian standing in Paris with a quarterfinal appearance at the Olympic Games.

Svitolina lasted into the third round but a three-set loss to Krejcikova ended her run in Paris. Elina will be a heavy favorite with odds at -185 to beat her teammate and friend in Toronto.

EJ Garr’s Elina Svitolina vs Marta Kostyuk prediction is filled with expectations of a second-round match that goes the distance featuring favorable odds, so check it out below.

Elina Svitolina vs Marta Kostyuk Prediction: Ukrainian Friends Meet in Canada

Odds updated at 7:00 am UK Time on August 8, 2024. Odds may now differ.

On July 26th, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk were waving flags on a boat in Paris, in the pouring rain, supporting Ukraine at the opening ceremonies for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

Ironically, the weather on the East Coast could affect matches in Toronto over the next couple of days so keep an eye on that.

Elina Svitolina was looking great in Paris after cruising to wins over Moyuka Uchijima and Jess Pegula and then the match with Barbora Krejcikova happened in the third round. It was an epic clash that went three sets along with a tie-breaking opening frame to get the show started.

I mention all that because getting past Shelby Rogers in the first round is like picking up a wooden nickel in the street. Shelby Rogers has got to be considering taking a break from tennis, and that is all I will say about the American’s current situation. I didn’t think Svitolina would let Rogers win one game after the Ukrainian took the first nine games in the match!

Marta Kostyuk finished Tatjana Maria off in the first round with the exact score as Svitolina defeated Rogers, 6 – 0, 6 – 2. Kostyuk wasn’t even challenged in the least and now we get to witness this gem of a match on Thursday at the National Bank Open.

These two may be friends, teammates, and compatriots during a tough time for their nation, but exiting this tournament isn’t on either of their minds. We’re going the distance, people!

ELINA SVITOLINA RECENT FORM

Svitolina might have finished a step lower in Paris than her teammate across the court today but the line setters putting this much emphasis on Elina to plow past Marta isn’t going to happen.

Marta can win this match and this underdog has plenty of bite along with that bark so Elina better be ready for a long battle.

The 34-year-old now calls London home and has experience hoisting a trophy in Toronto from her run to the title in 2017.

Svitolina landed in the 34th spot of the WTA rankings this week and has an 11 – 5 record on hardcourts this campaign.

MARTA KOSTYUK RECENT FORM

Marta Kostyuk undoubtedly wants to prove why she deserves more respect than she is getting today. She is the one who reached the quarters in Paris and is also ranked 14 spots ahead of Elina in the rankings (20).

As an underdog, I can’t wait to see how these two play against each other as the competitive side kicks in after the friendship takes a back seat for a hot minute.

Kostyuk is 16 – 6 on hardcourts this campaign and speaking of the Australian Open let’s not forget that Marta won the girls’ title there in 2017. That is one of four hardcourt titles owned by Kostyuk, her last coming at Austin a year ago.

SVITOLINA VS KOSTYUK H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

In 2018 at the Australian Open, Svitolina beat Kostyuk in straight-sets marking the only time the two have met on tour.
