I’m not huge on the way either of these guys has played in the year. Auger Aliassime has a deep run at a Masters, but even that tournament saw him get two retirements from injured players and a walkover from world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Hanfmann has been pretty poor as well, but the key here is that they’re both serve-centric players, both are fine on the clay and we’ve seen what the altitude has done to speed up conditions so far this week in matches between two strong servers.

I’m going back to the well by backing overs in another match that should see a deluge of service holds.

Felix Auger Aliassime Recent Form

Outside of his win against Casper Ruud in Madrid – which was, admittedly, an incredible performance – I’m not sold on the 12-5 record on the dirt for the 23-year-old.

Consider the fact that both Jakub Mensik and Jiri Lehecka retired injured from their matches against him in Madrid. Then there’s the incredible choke by Maximilian Marterer in Munich’s first round.

Throw in a pair of hard courters he beat at the French Open and a win against the stumbling Botic van de Zandschulp, and I’m not sure why the markets like him so much.

Now, this is the caliber of player he could very well beat, but we’ve seen plenty of guys who may not be as strong as him or in form push him this year.

Yannick Hanfmann Recent Form

It hasn’t been the greatest year for Hanfmann, who has shown some flashes of brilliance on rare occasions, but doesn’t have a winning record on any surface and has won two matches at the same tournament just twice.

So why back him? Well, there are a few reasons. Up in the mountains, Gstaad plays quicker than most clay events. It’s been notoriously serve-oriented this week, his opponent isn’t the most natural clay courter and Hanfmann has a strong serve, big forehand, comfort on the surface, and has made a run here in the past, even if it was a while ago.

The other part is the price. Hanfmann has put on a few really strong showings, a lot of mediocre performances, and some stinkers as well. If he was less of an underdog, the totals I’m backing would be different numbers or more expensive prices. That would make the wagers less enticing.

As it stands, I think he’s undervalued to a certain extent and so I’m going to back him on his most comfortable surface in altitude to rack up the holds of serve and keep things close with Auger Aliassime.
