Francisco Cerundolo vs Corentin Moutet Best Bet: Tuesday, January 17th
It’s time for the second round down under! Another big round of matches gets going on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, and we’ll be previewing a few of them.
For the first of our second-round selections from the men’s field, we’ll look at the contest between Francisco Cerundolo and Corentin Moutet.

Francisco Cerundolo vs Corentin Moutet Preview
January 18th, TBD (UK Time)
Talk about two players who came through polar opposite first-round encounters.
Moutet was tasked with taking down one of the strongest young players in the sport in Yibing Wu, who has a game that could see him skyrocket up the ranks of the ATP Tour if he can ever avoid the dips in form within matches that still pop up far too often.
Cerundolo, on the other hand, was given a fellow clay courter in Guido Pella. His compatriot had only played one match since 2021, meaning that win wasn’t exactly one that moves the needle on my assessment of Cerundolo’s play in quicker conditions.
The Argentinian has struggled in his hard-court play in general, but it’s especially pronounced as the court speed increases. His lone notable result on the pavement? That was last year in Miami – long known to have some of the slowest hard courts on the professional circuit.
I’m sceptical with regards to how strong his game actually is for the conditions in Melbourne.
Moutet’s game is more well-rounded, he can still fire some impressive first serves, and we shouldn’t see as many unforced errors off of his racquet. All that, coupled with the sizable surface edge for the Frenchman have me firmly in the camp that Moutet should be favoured entering this second-round clash.
Francisco Cerundolo vs Corentin Moutet Best Bet
I can understand why the Argentinian would be given a slight chance to win. The forehand and athleticism play on any surface, but that doesn’t mean I think he should be anywhere near favourite status.
The quicker surfaces still prove to be troublesome for him, as he’s clearly rushed in certain situations, having been accustomed to the timing to set up his shots that clay courts afford.
Moutet is incredibly consistent, more comfortable on hard courts and can spin his forehand cross-court into the Cerundolo backhand and pin him to his weaker wing.
Tactically, Moutet is also leaps and bounds ahead, as Cerundolo is more of a brute force kind of player, and lacks a lot of variety and the ability to construct points for my money.
