Francisco Cerundolo vs Dan Evans Best Bet: Friday, April 21st

What a time to find a break of serve for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who wins one for us at the margins with a 7-5 second set! He was the better player throughout, though, so it feels somewhat deserved.

For our final men’s article of the week, we’ll stick with the 500 in Barcelona and preview the matchup between Francisco Cerundolo and Dan Evans.

Francisco Cerundolo vs Dan Evans Preview

April 21st, 16:30 (UK Time)

It’s been a nice week for each of these two guys to this point, and a semifinal appearance at a strong 500 event will be the reward for one.

That is more likely than not going to be the Argentine, who is much more natural on clay, and whose game plays up on the surface, while Evans’ game is downgraded in a few different ways.

The British No. 2 plays with a decent serve and incredible backhand slice as his primary ways to win points. On clay, that serve is far from infallible and the slice is much less effective, considering the dirt produces a higher bounce, which neutralises the entire point of the shot.

His movement has improved in the last few seasons, but is still far from being an asset.

As for Cerundolo, his forehand is going to be the biggest weapon on the court, the surface edge is rather large in his favour and he can hit a much heavier, more topspin-centric ball from the baseline – something that is rewarded on clay courts.

I’ll happily back the 24-year-old to reach the weekend in Barcelona.

Francisco Cerundolo vs Dan Evans Best Bet

The odds do have Cerundolo as the overwhelming favourite in this one though.

So the question is, how much value is there in the handicap. I have this number as a very cheap -5, or -4.5 games in the 1.87-1.91 range.

That gives us a bit of an edge on the -4-game handicap at 1.93 odds. It isn’t a larger wager for me (it would’ve been had that -3.5 handicap stuck around, but the markets have bet that number down), but it’s certainly still one worth making.

  • Selection: Cerundolo -4 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.93 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 12:30 am on April 19th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
