Tommy Paul vs. Dan Evans Best Bet: Friday, August 12th

Friday’s selection from the men’s event in Montreal features two players looking to take advantage of a rare deep run at a Masters 1000 event, as Tommy Paul takes on Dan Evans for a spot in the semifinals at the Canadian Open.

Tommy Paul vs. Dan Evans Preview

August 12th, 23:30 UK Time

To say it’s been an incredible few months for Paul would be an understatement. Other than an early loss to the red-hot Nick Kyrgios, Tommy Paul has made the quarterfinals of every tournament he’s played other than Wimbledon (fourth round and still the second week) since mid-June.

The American has found form at the best time, with the season shifting to his preferred surface. With an improving game on serve, elite movement, athleticism and solid form, Paul has become one of the most underrated top-40 players on tour.

This week has seen the 25-year-old defeat one of the tour’s more promising young prospects in Carlos Alcaraz and then easily dispatch Marin Cilic as an underdog to boot.

As a player that can apply pressure consistently to even the bigger servers on tour, he matches up well with a lighter serving and hitting Evans very well.

The Brit has been resourceful in a pair of wins against Taylor Fritz in the past few weeks (arguably winning despite being the second best player in each match), as well as defeating a less fit Filip Krajinovic and erratic Andrey Rublev.

With Paul a much more consistent opponent, as well as being in-form, it’s tough to see how Evans can really trouble the American.

Tommy Paul vs. Dan Evans Best Bet

Whether it comes down to form, the stylistic matchup or play this week, Paul appears to be in a tremendous position to reach a Masters 1000 semifinal in Montreal.

Evans doesn’t possess the power to trouble Paul, nor should his slice induce as many unforced errors as it usually does.

With this handicap under the three games mark, I’m more than willing to back the favourite.

  • Selection: Paul -2.5 Games
  • Odds: 1.93 (Unibet)
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as at 5:30 am on August 12th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
