Friday Tennis Best Bet: Rennes Challenger, Hugo Gaston vs Benoit Paire
Hugo Gaston vs Benoit Paire Best Bet: Friday, September 16th
While the women’s selection ended a nice winning streak we’d built this week, Harold Mayot survived a near choke to cover our -3.5 Games handicap by the slightest of margins on the men’s side.
We’ll look to continue the winning ways from the men’s events as we continue to look for value from the Challenger Tour this week with the main men’s tour on hiatus.
For Friday, we head to France, where a couple of men playing on home soil will look to move on to the semifinal round in Rennes, as Hugo Gaston looks to take down the mercurial Benoit Paire.

Hugo Gaston vs Benoit Paire Preview
September 16, 18:00 UK Time
There should be an electric atmosphere in the northwestern part of France on Friday evening, as these two square off. Not only is this a matchup between two Frenchmen, but the crowds have packed in to watch the incredibly entertaining Paire each time he’s played this week.
The 33-year-old is incredibly talented, but his admitted lack of motivation, as well as his on-court antics often taking over his game have seen him struggle mightily for a while now. His 11-27 record this season is nothing to write home about, and his first two wins (also against his compatriots) included a very close three-set affair with Dan Added (in which he was under 1.50 to win) and Clement Tabur – a player primarily known for clay-court play and at the ITF level, no less.
Gaston hasn’t been much better this year, but his rock-solid consistency has never come into question and his wins this week may not have been dominant, but his win against French prospect Gabriel Debru is the best either man has put forward.
When it comes to the matchup between these two, I’ll side with Gaston here.
For starters, his defensive, consistent play from the baseline is enough to potentially frustrate Paire – and we all know what happens to Paire’s play when that occurs. It’s also a strong style to play against Paire, who doesn’t have the requisite power to hit through Gaston. If he can target his older counterpart’s weak forehand wing, Gaston should be able to coax plenty of unforced errors.
Hugo Gaston vs Benoit Paire Best Bet
Ultimately, while both men are out of form this season, Gaston has had the slightly better week leading into this matchup and is just far too sturdy both on the court and mentally for me not to deem him a much larger favourite than we’re seeing in the betting markets.
