After receiving a bye in the first round of the China Open, Anastasia Potapova will take on Greet Minnen in the second round listed as the favorite to advance in Section 7.

A third-round appearance at this WTA1000 event is at stake in Beijing as we continue the Asian swing of the WTA Tour.

Minnen picked up a first-round over Erika Andreeva on Tuesday, and our WTA expert is out for revenge after missing that call yesterday.

EJ Garr’s Greet Minnen vs Anastasia Potapova prediction has expectations toward a Belgian meltdown and you can find his tip at -108 odds below.

I admit that Minnen got me yesterday and my call on Andreeva to get the Belgian flopped so I apologize for the call. I plan on getting it back today because Potapova is not Erika Andreeca and the 28-seed in this event has been breaking everything in sight lately.

I have covered about 5 Potapova matches lately and that return of serve has changed the quality of her game since the North American swing event in Cleveland.

Not that the three wins in Ohio were against high-quality opponents but it was how Potapova won those matches before losing to McCartney Kessler in the semis.

I watched the Minnen Andreeva match yesterday and Andreeva put herself in a bind right out of the gate being broken to start the match. Despite the slow start, Minnen was down 4 – 3 and then that Andreeva serve was broken again at 5 – 5 giving the Belgian the juice to finish the set, 7 – 5.

Minnen broke Andreeva three more times in the second set that was all she wrote.

I expect a complete reversal of that today with Potapova finding a way to break down Minnen’s serve and cause the Belgian some frustration.

I am a little surprised to see Potapova at -190 as I wrap up this article and I hope it doesn’t get to -200 because that could affect the handicap -3. I don’t want to see it move to -3.5. The -3 suits me just fine!

GREET MINNEN RECENT FORM

Minnen was an even-money offer against Andreeva on Wednesday and the Belgian needed 1:47 to finish her off in straight sets to open the China Open.

Minnen is ranked 94th on the WTA Tour and has alternated wins and losses over the last 10 outings. I discussed that fact yesterday in my preview she was at 9 outings alternating wins and losses.

Minnen is 16 – 17 on hardcourts and one win away from leveling that record for the campaign but she is still 24 – 28 in 2024 facing a potential losing record.

ANASTASIA POTAPOVA FORM

Ana Potapova is 5 – 2 in the last 7 outings improving her record to 16 – 12 on hard courts this year. Potapova is 25 – 20 in 2024 and in a position to have a winning record for the third straight campaign.

Ana was ranked as high as 27th in 2023 and that number has dipped a little to 38th entering this week in Beijing.

MINNEN VS POTAPOVA HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH
