Gregoire Barrere vs Chris Eubanks Best Bet: Monday, March 27th

Another day, another men’s tennis player playing through an injury instead of retiring. Not fun stuff. That’s now three combined medical timeouts from the last two men we’ve had bets on.

It’s a new week, but the main tour is still in Miami as we head into the business end of the year’s second Masters 1000 tournament. For our selection on Monday, let’s take a look at the matchup between Gregoire Barrere and Chris Eubanks.

In this article:

Gregoire Barrere vs Chris Eubanks Preview

March 27th, 22:00 (UK Time)

It’s a bit of a shock third-round encounter between Barrere and Eubanks, considering they were both unseeded players and rather large underdogs in their second round matches on Saturday.

Eubanks overcame a slow start to beat Borna Coric, while Barrere stunned the in-form Cam Norrie as a nearly 6.00 underdog (and made quick work of the British No. 1 to boot).

Barrere is a player that enjoys playing on quicker surfaces, and his record is a bit quirky, in the sense that the vast majority of his notable results – whether in Challenger Tour events or at the main tour level – have come indoors and in his home country of France.

Outdoors, where things like wind, or humid air (two things Miami has had plenty of this week), his game isn’t nearly as imposing and he’s never really had the sustained success he has when playing indoors.

In fact, prior to this week, Barrere had lost his last four matches played outdoors. Those include lopsided losses to Quentin Halys and Jack Sock, as well as closer losses to Tomas Martin Etcheverry (who is still figuring out how to translate his big forehand to hard courts as a naturally clay courter) and Constant Lestienne. Needless to say, that’s far from being a murderer’s row of opposition.

Eubanks struggled early against Coric, not backing up his first serve well enough by netting easy first balls that were in short, central positions on the court, but once he figured out his service games, he was able to wear the Croatian down and apply pressure to his service games on a consistent basis, allowing him to pull off the comeback.

His serve is the biggest weapon on court in this matchup and I’m not sure in conditions that could see the balls fluff up and slow down rather quickly that Barrere has the requisite weapons to pressure the Eubanks one-handed backhand.

Gregoire Barrere vs Chris Eubanks Best Bet

I think we’re seeing a rather large overreaction to Barrere’s win over Norrie in the markets here.

His overall record on outdoor hard courts and when out of Europe simply isn’t all that impressive. I’m more inclined to believe in the bigger picture than the two wins he has this week. There is certainly something to be said for momentum, but I’m not sure it warrants making Eubanks the underdog in this matchup.

I’ll take the American to win on home soil with odds around even money.

  • Selection: Eubanks to win
  • Best Odds: 2.02 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 3/10
