Not a fun start to the season for written previews, but we’ll stick to the process and keep plugging away. This tournament isn’t going to provide the most appealing matchups to watch, and just about every player involved in this 250 event has some obvious downside to their games, but there are still betting opportunities to be had.
While I don’t trust either of these guys all that much, I do think that Griekspoor is the player I’d rather back in this one at these prices than his compatriot. He’s got the bigger serve, better forehand, and somehow, even the less leaky backhand.
His return game is a concern, and it’s why I can’t play the handicap with any kind of larger staking, but if these courts are playing relatively slowly as they have in recent years, he may have a few more chances than we’d normally expect on an indoor hard court with him.

Tallon Griekspoor Recent Form
I think Griekspoor will actually be disappointed with how he started the new season. Sure, on the surface, a loss to Hubert Hurkacz in quick conditions down under doesn’t seem like the worst of losses, but there are two reasons I don’t think he’ll be okay with that result.
The first is that he didn’t win a set in the match. When playing someone as serve-oriented as Hurkacz, who plays so many close sets almost by default thanks to his game style, being broken in every set and not winning any in a best of five match is surely disappointing.
The other is that Hurkacz hasn’t looked the same since Wimbledon and though he performed decently at the United Cup, it didn’t take long for him to look uncharacteristically poor and physically off in Melbourne, as he exited fairly early as well.
That said, Griekspoor has shown that with his power and top-30 potential, he can play some really strong players close (just ask Alexander Zverev, who believes if he applies himself, he has top-10 potential). I’m not sold on him making that jump, but I don’t need him to in a match against someone like van de Zandschulp.
Botic van de Zandschulp Recent Form
Despite the upset of Carlos Alcaraz that blindsided the tennis world, van de Zandschulp has been one of the worst players in the top-100 for an extended period now. A few runs at German clay court Challengers and that third round appearance in New York City last summer are keeping him in that ranking range, but he really struggled to string together main draw wins in 2024, and that has continued into the new season.
He’s played just two matches so far and has lost both, winning just one set to five lost in Auckland and at the Australian Open.
The serve and forehand are okay, though nothing special and the backhand has been letting him down for a year now, uncorking unforced errors at a simply unsustainable rate.
Without a standout return game, I’m not sure what their is to like about him taking on Griekspoor.
Tallon Griekspoor vs Botic van de Zandschulp H2H – Stat of the Match
This series is tied up 2-2 on the professional circuit. It has been two years since they played, however, with Griekspoor winning a fairly straightforward match at the Australian Open in 2023 in their last encounter.
