Harold Mayot vs Guido Pella Best Bet: Thursday, July 6th

While we continue to wait for the women’s bets to take place, we did have a pair of men’s writeups play out on Wednesday. Thankfully, Tommy Paul won in straightforward fashion as expected, while Ilya Ivashka managed to win from an incredibly unlikely position. One of those wins was long overdue, and it feels great to have gotten one! He was even in games won through two sets, but the lopsided set came in the form of a 6-0 fourth set (or as we call it in the tennis world, a bagel) to get the -7.5-game handicap home!

For Thursday, we’ll break down the tilt between Harold Mayot and Guido Pella as they vie for a spot in the third round at Wimbledon.

Harold Mayot vs Guido Pella Preview

Thu, July 6th, 15:00 (UK Time)

What a win for Pella on Wednesday. After a strong start on the opening day of action, Pella did cough up his break lead in the second set before the match was delayed…and delayed and delayed. It finally concluded on Wednesday, but not before Pella experienced a scare from Borna Coric, who came back from two sets down to take the Argentine to five sets.

Some people may say “who cares? A win is a win!” That may be true, but without the typical off day to rest thanks to the rain that washed out play Tuesday and delayed it on Wednesday, the veteran won’t have that off day to recover.

That makes me like the young Frenchman a bit more here, as he was able to finish off Benjamin Bonzi in a more efficient manner.

Mayot has also been in great form, having qualified at Wimbledon in what has been a breakout 2023 campaign. The youngster was a standout as a junior and a vaunted prospect for a few years, but some physical issues and a lack of success for a year or two at the Challenger level had concerns popping up.

This past week, however, he’s shown why many were excited for his pro career. His first serve has been lights out. In the four matches from Roehampton and the All England club he’s played in qualifying and through one round, he’s won between 75% and 81% of points behind his first serve. What could be more impressive though is that he’s won over half his second serve points in three of those four as well.

With Pella potentially fatigued, not having shown the ability to back up lengthy matches (even if only about 65% of it was played the day prior) and not having the most powerful or aggressive game, the young gun from Metz is in a strong position to make the third round.

Harold Mayot vs Guido Pella Best Bet

On quicker courts, I have Mayot closer to the 1.66 price point here. That’s before factoring in Pella still having question marks around his durability, which only get more pronounced after having nearly faded on Wednesday.

Take away that off day that is far more important to him than a young player like Mayot, and I have this price in the low 1.60s. To get this in the 1.75 price range, I’m happy to attack.

  • Selection: Mayot to win
  • Best Odds: 1.75 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 2:30 am UK Time on July 6th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
