Nothing to report yet on the result from Tuesday’s match, as the match was suspended due to darkness heading into the third set. Was a stroke of good luck as far as I’m concerned, as it looked a lot like the match from Monday where the player I backed took the opening set then looked as though they’d be dismissed with ease in the next two.
For Wednesday’s preview, we’ll move back to hard courts and the indoor Open de Vendee in France on the ATP Challenger Tour and look at Hugo Gaston vs Mathias Bourgue.

We’ve opposed Bourgue before and we’ll do it again here.
Much like when I opposed him with Gijs Brouwer, I think Gaston is far too well-rounded and a tier or two above his countryman in terms of talent.
Bourgue may have a strong serve and hold with regularity, but that’s about the only thing he does well and the handicap here is only a single break, which Gaston should be able to cover fairly simply.

The 23-year-old Frenchman hasn’t been crushing the competition of late, but he’s also been playing a much stronger level of opposition than someone like Bourgue.
To his credit, he actually emerged from his first encounter this week against Otto Virtanen, an indoor hard-court specialist – and he did so by a four game margin.
Last week he also beat Dino Prizmic (in a match we actually bet the Croatian in) and lost to Brouwer in an incredibly tight match.
Gaston has the ability to construct holds of serve, while being a really strong returner that even plays in quick conditions such as these.
His biggest edge in this matchup, however, comes from the baseline, where Bourgue lacks dimension and Gaston is incredibly strong at prolonging rallies, moving his opposition around and eliciting errors.
Surprisingly, Bourgue has actually been more successful this year on clay than on hard courts.
That may simply be a by-product of his age and the fact that despite his strong serve, he does need more time from the baseline to set up his groundstrokes and execute.
Since getting back onto hard courts he has a pedestrian record with wins against players on the decliner or those that have had motivational questions for quite some time.
Against a player like Gaston, who is one of the better Challenger Tour players out there, I’m a bit sceptical as to how competitive he can be.
No head-to-head to report on between these two countrymen, which seems odd for how much they’ve each played at this level in the last few years.
It does simply come down, simply, to a a mismatch in how these two have been playing and how well these two play from the baseline for me.
