That means Wednesday is going to be a busy day at the All England Club. Let’s take a look at another first-rounder as Ilya Ivashka takes on clay-court specialist Federico Coria.

Talk about a contrast in styles and surface preferences. Ivashka plays an aggressive game and has a far better track record on grass, while Coria has played four times on lawn courts in his professional career, losing by a margin in almost all of them (the only relatively close loss was to a fellow South American who wasn’t familiar with grass courts at the time).
Let’s just say grass-court tennis tends to be a quick pit stop for a big paycheque at Wimbledon or in Wimbledon qualifying for the Argentine.
With very little aggression to his game, no real power unless a ball is left short and on his forehand side, and a serve that is tough to protect on quicker, lower-bouncing surfaces that don’t reward spin, it’s tough to see how Coria keeps things close in this one, much less comes away with the win.
Ivashka hasn’t been great this grass season himself, but he did win the second set in Mallorca against Roberto Carballes Baena with relative ease and led by a break in the deciding set, before his game imploded. His other losses have been to players that prefer quicker conditions and neither was by a particularly egregious scoreline.
This is a great chance for the Belarussian to get back on track and pick up a much-needed win and some rankings points.

The 9.5 and 10-game handicaps are generally reserved for the top three or four players in the world in the opening rounds of grand slams.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t other matchups that should see those kinds of handicaps. With the lack of success off clay in his career and a vulnerable serve, I’m more than happy to give up a hefty head start against someone like Coria who is far more likely than not to lose a set or two by a wide margin.
