Not the greatest return from Davis Cup action from Pedro Cachin. He looked a step or two slow, despite the extra day to rest up after travelling and lost in pretty straightforward fashion to Hugo Dellien.
For Thursday’s men’s preview, it’s off to Dallas and the match between John Isner and Daniel Altmaier.
In this article:
February 9th, 21:00 (UK Time)
Isner is in his element on these super quick courts, where his massive serve basically gives him a free pass on serve.
Of course, the flip side of that, is the 37-year-old who doesn’t move well and was never adept on the return of serve, has that much tougher of a time. It makes his matches incredibly difficult to watch, but relatively straightforward. Yet the market often leaves an opening to stake out a strong position in the betting markets.
This is the second iteration of this event in Dallas, and the quick courts have produced the results you’d expect from the American.
Last year, he played seven sets, with five of those going to a tiebreak. In his opening round contest? He played an underpowered Chun Hsin Tseng, and despite finding a few break point chances early? Another pair of tiebreaks.
Now playing a tall player in Altmaier with a booming first serve of his own? I expect nothing less than more of the same in this one.
With the price being really cheap to back Altmaier to win, it also means we’re seeing relatively cheap prices to back the over games and Altmaier handicap markets.
Altmaier is a relatively serve-oriented player in his own right. In his three losses to strong servers this year, he’s played 10 sets, with three going to a tiebreak and another two reaching 5-5 and ending in 12 games.
When I look to play higher numbers in terms of backing the over, I don’t just want big serves, I look for quicker courts, poor returners and guys that aren’t the most mobile.
All those boxes are checked in this match. Perhaps Isner finds a break or two in this one, but my numbers suggest that would be a rare, as opposed to regular, occurrence. I’ll gladly take the over games and handicap for Altmaier here.
Odds as at 4:30 am UK Time on February 6th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
