Happy to back this to go longer than the minimum number of sets in a best-of-five encounter at these kinds of odds.

For starters, we have a talented, but volatile, underdog in Karatsev. Capable of hitting anyone off the court for a set and likely to hit his way out of another, the style he employs lends itself to this kind of bet.

Then there’s the fact that the quicker nature of grass courts tends to tighten matches up and lead to closer sets, which gives both guys the opportunity to sneak out close sets.

Third, Khachanov has struggled of late to really dominate matches and put players away with ease. I’m not sure why he’s played so many close sets and matches of late, but on a quick court against someone that possesses firepower like Karatsev, I’m not expecting him to turn that around on Tuesday.

Karen Khachanov Recent Form

Since his loss in the final 16 of the Rome Masters, Khachanov has sputtered a bit, losing three of his last four matches, including both of his matches on the grass in recent weeks.

Losses to Aleksandar Vukic and Sebastian Korda (both by the slightest of margins) are nothing to hang one’s head over, but they also show just how easy it can be for strong players and decent servers to keep things close on this surface.

It makes it hard to believe in him as an overwhelming favourite, especially taking on someone who can play at as high of a level as Karatsev can.

If he can play with decent controlled aggression, he should come away victorious, as that ability is what sets him apart from his compatriot, who has plenty of aggression, but very little control.

Aslan Karatsev Recent Form

We haven’t seen much of Karatsev this season, as the former No. 14 was injured in his first tournament of the year and just came back at the Madrid Masters.

He’s only won one match to this point, but put up a fight in Paris and then in his lone match on grass in Germany, as well.

His game is as straightforward as they come. Grip it and rip it. Karatsev goes for his shots and knows no other way. He doesn’t have much touch or net game, but he has explosive power from the baseline and when finds a purple patch, he’s tough to slow down.

Thanks to that boom or bust mentality, carving out a path to victory for him is fairly easy. The tough part is assessing how often he can actually get there.

Karen Khachanov vs Aslan Karatsev H2H – Stat of the Match

Khachanov has won five of the seven prior meetings between these two, but the major caveat here is that they haven’t played one another in over two years, with three of the seven meetings coming in 2016 or earlier.

Needless to say, not exactly the most relevant. I also don’t think that it changes the handicap. I would expect Khachanov – as the steadier player – to emerge victorious more often than not. I’m just not sure he should be a 4:1 favourite.
