For the second preview of the day from the Miami Open, we’ll jump over to the WTA singles draw and take a look at a rematch between two players we saw square off at the last 1000-level tournament in Indian Wells. Let’s dig deeper into our Krueger vs Podoroska prediction. Podoroska’s win probability is only 33.1% while Krueger is favored to win at 1.43 odds. The handicap is 3.5 games and the total games line is 22.5.

Krueger vs Podoroska Prediction: Back American in Rematch as Conditions Quicken a Bit

  • Prediction: Krueger -4 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.99
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 2:15 am UK Time on March 20th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

Though Podoroska won the match between these two in Indian Wells, the larger sample sizes, as well as the game profiles of each of these women point to a Krueger victory.

We also know that Krueger did have a lead in that last match after she won the opening set 6-3 and that the conditions in Miami should be a bit more to her liking than they were on the slower hard courts in California.

I’ll take the 19-year-old on the ascent with the bigger weapons and more natural hard-court game based more on pace than weight of shot, even if I have to give up a fairly sizable head start.

Ashlyn Krueger Recent Form

We’re starting to see the talented teenager’s tennis come along more and more as she gains experience at the top level. It’s still a fairly raw level, but we know the first serve has elite potential and the ability to hit through the forehand and finish points should also take her places.

The question now becomes, how much can she improve her movement and court coverage, and can she continue to solidify her backhand? Keep in mind, that the ability to get back to neutral footing on return depends on getting to one’s spots on time and being able to flip control of rallies to utilize that offensive game. If she can continue to improve in that regard, it makes the offensive game even more potent.

We’ve seen her beat plenty of WTA Tour-level competition this year, but the fact remains that when she comes up against some of the better players out there, she’s struggled to find wins. That may just be a byproduct of being 19 and new to the scene, but it does mean there are obvious things to work on.

Luckily, this match is far more manageable than some of the tough draws she’s been forced to deal with this year, and against a more clay-court-centric opponent, where she should be able to impose her game more often than not.

Nadia Podoroska Recent Form

Prior to her two main draw wins in Indian Wells, the start to 2024 was going about as well as you’d expect for someone like Podoroska, who has never been one to have much success on hard courts.

Even those wins in California (including the comeback against Krueger) were only made possible by a late withdrawal from the main draw and her winning a draw, as she got in as a lucky loser who actually lost in qualifying.

She looked better this time around in qualifying, but she didn’t play anyone with much finishing power or with a more imposing game style than she will on Wednesday.

Podoroska’s forehand can translate to hard courts, but her second serve is a lot more vulnerable on a surface where spin isn’t rewarded as much, her backhand is a little too weak, the net clearance isn’t ideal for the surface on either groundstroke and her weight of shot doesn’t have nearly as much impact either.

I’d expect Krueger to push back and avenge the blown lead from a few weeks ago in South Florida.

Ashlyn Krueger vs Nadia Podoroska H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played twice before, both coming on hard courts. Krueger won the first matchup in Seoul with relative ease, while Podoroska won most recently on the slower courts in Indian Wells in comeback fashion from a set down.

Now, two matches still isn’t a large enough sample, but the conditions here are probably closer to Seoul’s nowadays and the matchup and surface should both still be considered advantages for the American.

Despite being just 19 years old, Krueger has also raced out to an elo rating lead on hard courts of over 100 points.
