Marc Andrea Huesler vs Luca van Assche Best Bet: Tuesday, February 7th

Monday’s ATP selection ends up a lovely one, as Luciano Darderi sails home to victory against Hugo Gaston. It took a while to find the break, but from 4-4 in the opening set, it was one-way traffic, as the young Italian won seven consecutive games.

For Tuesday, it’s to the indoor courts of Montpellier, France, and the battle between Marc Andrea Huesler and Luca van Assche.

Marc Andrea Huesler vs Luca van Assche Preview

February 7th, 15:00 (UK Time)

One of last year’s revelations on quicker indoor courts in Huesler is looking to do more damage in the south of France this week, as he’s into the main draw of Montpellier.

Taking on van Assche, he has a solid chance of picking up a first-round win (though Holger Rune awaits in the second round – that could prove to be a very tough task for the Swiss), as the underpowered Frenchman may be overmatched as he jumps up to the main tour.

Considering the indoor courts and the Greenset courts typical to the event in Montpellier, you’d have to give the considerable advantage in terms of comfort and skill set on the surface to Huesler.

With his big left-handed serve, powerful forehand and ability to keep points short, he’s well-suited to thrive in situations like this.

With van Assche not having the weapons to find quick, easy holds like his counterpart in this one, Huesler should be able to find more consistent pressure on return as well. The lanky Swiss isn’t elite on the return of serve by any means, but he’s shown a bit more prowess in that regard in recent times than he has previously.

After a rough first set over the weekend in Davis Cup action, the 26-year-old was able to find consistent breaks of serve indoors against big servers in Oscar Otte and Alexander Zverev, picking up a pair of wins for Switzerland. Where some players have long travel spots coming from their Davis Cup ties, Huesler built some form, as well as confidence, and had plenty of time to head to Montpellier and prepare for a match in similar conditions against a Challenger Tour-level opponent whose success has come primarily on clay courts.

The Frenchman has struggled this year in the early going, as many of his rankings points were accumulated on the dirt courts in 2022 and the quicker courts in Australia and Europe to start the year haven’t been kind.

The last time we saw van Assche he also looked as though he may have picked up some sort of physical issue. After winning the first set against his compatriot, and fellow slow-court player Geoffrey Blancaneaux, he proceeded to win two games in the final two sets in Quimper.

For my money, while Huesler can be erratic at times, and won’t fare well in prolonged points, this handicap has to be at least 3.5-to-4 games on a quick court. If van Assche was a stronger server who preferred medium or slower conditions-wise, I’d understand, but his serve has been fallible at tour level and this particular matchup is certainly ideal for the Swiss.

I’m going to use larger stakes on this one, as I feel that Huesler is being incredibly undervalued. I’d caution to watch the scores live and look to potentially hedge if Huesler gets out to a lead. The way our leads have held up this year, it may be worth securing profit on a larger-staking selection.
