Marco Cecchinato vs Giulio Zeppieri Best Bet: Tuesday, April 25th

A comeback from a set and a break down from Jurij Rodionov. Man, it’s nice to get one of those back! The Austrian’s game was erratic to start, as he lost eight of the first 10 games, but he rebounded well and his superior hitting took over as the match progressed, to end up winning in a decider.

Onto Tuesday, where the qualifying for the men’s draw wraps up. Let’s delve into the contest between Marco Cecchinato and Giulio Zeppieri.

Marco Cecchinato vs Giulio Zeppieri Preview

April 25th, 10:00 (UK Time)

Well, a day after playing one explosive but inconsistent lefty to win his qualifying match, I’m going back to the well with yet another volatile southpaw in Zeppieri.

Much like Rodionov, I like Zeppieri’s game and how it profiles at about 650 metres of altitude. It isn’t so elevated that the sometimes-erratic Italian really struggles to keep the ball in the court thanks to the thinner air. Yet his serve and forehand become that much more effective and he should be able to find more cheap points in his service games than his older compatriot.

I’m also a fan of his left-handed forehand into the one hander that Cecchinato plays with on his backhand wing. Zeppieri can flatten it out and hit through the ball when it’s left short, but also hit with a good amount of topspin, which makes it tough to attack – especially with a one-handed backhand that can be much tougher to control.

I’m also not sold on the 30-year-old’s first win in Madrid against Timofey Skatov. The Kazakh has tried to add aggression to his game and is a natural clay courter, but can still be erratic and doesn’t really have the weapons to trouble Cecchinato, which allowed him to work his way into the match from a set down and start hitting the acute angles he’s so adept at finding.

Zeppieri is a much tougher opponent, both in his game and the particular matchup.

Marco Cecchinato vs Giulio Zeppieri Best Bet

The markets have correctly identified Zeppieri as a tougher test for the veteran from Palermo, but I don’t think they’ve given Zeppieri enough respect.

For me, he’s an up-and-comer that has more to his game than Skatov, matches up well here and should be a 50/50 chance with Cecchinato. I’ll happily back the underdog in this all-Italian battle.

  • Selection: Zeppieri to win
  • Best Odds: 2.27 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10
