A nice draw for Trungelliti as he looks to continue his nice run of form he’s built in the last week and a half.
The 33-year-old had a strong week in Murcia, reaching the semifinals and only losing by three games to the up-and-coming Matteo Arnaldi.
Now he’s just a win against the world No. 662 from another quarterfinal in Madrid. Trungelliti likely feels at home as well, as the Argentine has lived and trained in Spain for several years now.
With a decent serve and forehand, as well as comfort on the surface, he’s always one to watch – even against stronger competition.
His primary issue has always been lapses in form within matches that seemingly come out of nowhere and he almost forces himself into playing closer matches than he should.
That isn’t likely to happen against Perez Contri, who simply isn’t a Challenger Tour level player. He’s in this draw as a lucky loser, after dropping a three-set match to hard courter Billy Harris and needed three sets to beat the mercurial Alexey Vatutin in the opening round.
Against a veteran, who enjoys clay-court play and has been in good form, he should be in really tough here.

With Trungelliti a deserved favourite in this matchup, it ultimately comes down to how big of a favourite you believe he deserves to be.
The market has settled on a -4.5-game number and I have this closer to -6. Even if we take into account his penchant for struggling and coughing up a few games through his own unpredictable and erratic play, I can’t get this number to -4.5.
The talent difference here is just far too pronounced, Trungelliti has been finding form and his 25-year-old opponent has been struggling on the lower ITF Tour against plenty of players that aren’t close to making the jump to this level.
