It’s been a rough few months for Griekspoor in his first full season at the top levels of the men’s game.

Now on a six-match losing skid on tour that dates back to the U.S. Open, the 26-year-old has seen his hard court record drop to 6-13 in 2022 – with a 1-7 mark indoors. While his game is strong enough to play on the quicker surfaces, he doesn’t have the time he needs and is rushed far too often. In New York City, he lost to a clay-court grinder in straight sets, while also posting losses against a declining Vasek Pospisil from a set-up, the mercurial Alexander Bublik and then an Aslan Karatsev, whose struggles almost match up with the Dutchman’s.

Giron, on the other hand, reached the final of the event in San Diego, and then lost to a resurgent Dominic Thiem in three sets and an in-form Sebastian Korda in three sets as well in Antwerp.

He’s playing some decent tennis at the moment, and his game plays up in quicker conditions, where he can find a few more cheap points.

With a strong, consistent game from the baseline, he’s also well-positioned to extend rallies and extract the unforced errors that Griekspoor is prone to cough up on a regular basis.

With the Dutchman’s massive struggles of late, and propensity to fire erratic groundstrokes on the regular, Giron is the perfect type of opponent to oppose him with.

Giron enjoys playing in medium to quicker conditions, is rock solid from the baseline and isn’t mired in nearly as bad of a slump.

We’re likely seeing value here thanks to the head-to-head record between the two. I’m fine with the market overvaluing Griekspoor over his 2-0 record for a few reasons. For starters, the only match they played this year was on clay – which favours Griekspoor in a big way. The other match was played indoors, but last season, when Griekspoor was having a career year.

Taking the 1.70 odds on offer here seems to be a valuable position in my books.
