Defending champion Maria Timofeeva will face Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round of the Budapest Grand Prix with a quarterfinal appearance in sight.
Sasnovich provided the first big upset of the tournament in her first-round battle with Viktoriya Tomova on Monday, as the 2-seed was bounced from the event early.
Timofeeva was also an underdog in her first-round clash against Swiss native Simova Waltert, and Maria will again play the underdog role in this second-round battle.
Sasnovich is favored at -150 to get past the defending champ, and EJ Garr’s Maria Timofeeva vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich prediction offers pleasant value at +140 which you can find below.

The last thing I want to do is sound like a broken record but this match between compatriots is going the distance and I will tell you why!
Timofeeva is the defending champion of the Budapest Grand Prix and was the underdog in all seven of her matches last year in this event. How’d that work out? There wasn’t a single match that Timofeeva featured less than a +133 line in that run to the title, and two of those wins had her listed at +300+. Sometimes that Lucky Loser ticket ends up in a run to a tournament win, although we know that doesn’t happen very often.
At +135, Timofeeva has another opportunity to provide an upset in Budapest, and it’s not Aliaksandra Sasnovich who is playing her best tennis this year. Sasnovich has fallen to 134th in the WTA rankings, and with a record under .500 for the season and no titles since 2013, the 30-year-old is showing some signs of decline.
Timofeeva is 10 years younger than her fellow countrywoman, and those young legs will come in handy in a lengthy battle that I expect today.
As my bonus bet, Timofeeva Moneyline makes the grade for me because I love an underdog as much as I love making my 3-set calls. You’ll never guess why.
This is one is easy… +135 and +140 tickets to cash today because we like plus-money bets and our ROI% appreciates it even more! The match goes the distance and Maria reaches back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in Budapest.
Timoffeva is 7 – 1 in her last 8 battles in Budapest, including that run to the title last year. As the lucky loser, Maria used it as well as anyone can en route to her first WTA250 level tournament win.
Maria has won 5 tournaments in her young career with four at the ITF level but she is only 20 and has plenty of time left to build on her resume.
After a 10 – 6 record on clay last year, Maria has only won 4 of her 10 matches on clay this season and has a 13 – 14 record for the 2024 campaign.
Sasnovich reached as high as 30 in the WTA rankings in 2022, and now the 30-year-old has been going backward for the last two campaigns. Aliaksandra ended the 2023 campaign ranked 90th, and at 17 – 18 this year she has fallen outside of the top 100 for the first time since 2017.
Aliaksandra and Tomova combined for 13 breaks of serve in the first round, and she lost her first three serves and the first set in ugly fashion before mounting the comeback.
Timofeeva and Sasnovich will be meeting for the first time today in Budapest.
The winner of this second-round affair will face either Suzan Lamens or Carole Monnet in the quarterfinals of the Budapest Grand Prix.
