Maya Joint and Marina Stakusic square off on Tuesday at the Merida Open as the first round of the main draw gets underway.
The Canadian native arrives at the party as the favorite to advance and Marina Stakusic is coming off a tournament win at Tampico after reeling off 7 straight wins in Mexico.
At -125 toward a win for the Canadian, EJ Garr’s Maya Joint vs Marina Stakusic prediction features odds at -106 which you can find below.

The -125 offer on Stakusic to get past Joint is fair enough but you know me around here by now, right? When I think I can find something closer to even money I will go out of my way to make that play and the -1 at -106 floats my boat!
Stakusic reeled off 7 wins in Tampico to earn that title this past weekend and it is a surprise to see the Canadian native barely favored to win this match.
It almost feels like a setup because Maya Joint isn’t playing her best tennis lately and Stakusic is coming off that tourney win. So why is this line here for the taking?
That is a good question and my answer is that the line setters are expecting a letdown for the Canadian native after claiming her first tournament win of the campaign.
Joint was ousted from Tampico by another Canadian last week as Rebecca Marino ended the Australian’s run after picking up two wins.
Stakusic started that event in qualifying and had to earn her way into the main draw before breaking out five more wins en route to the title. Marina was only pushed to three sets in three of seven wins in Tampico.
Wins over Sara Sorribes Tormo and 75th-ranked Anna Blinkova to win the title should give Stakusic the confidence she’ll need to win a couple of matches this week at the Merdia Open.
The Stakusic -1 is the play to make!
Maya Joint won four outings at the US Open and hasn’t won more than two matches in any of the last five tournaments.
Joint is ranked 110th on the WTA Tour and the 18-year-old Aussie has produced an impressive 60 – 25 record in her first season as a pro.
With a 37 – 15 record on hard courts this season, Joint ran off a 21 – 8 record on clay and started the season ranked 738th.
Marina Stakusic went 7 – 0 in Tampico and is ranked 116th after the new numbers came out today.
The 19-year-old Canadian went 26 – 5 last season to make a splash on the WTA Tour and starting this season ranked 273rd.
Stakusic is 26 – 21 in 2024 and has a 14 – 11 hard court record.
Maya Joint and Marina Stakusic are meeting for the first time on the WTA Tour.
The winner of this match will advance to face either Tatjana Maria or Nine Stojanvic in the second round of the Merida Open.
