Monday Tennis Best Bet: ATP San Diego, Constant Lestienne vs Brandon Holt

Constant Lestienne vs Brandon Holt Best Bet: Monday, September 19th
A new week is upon us and it’s one of the more interesting ones. With the ATP Tour resuming play after a week off for the Davis Cup, we have plenty of tournaments to watch. WIth the WTA Tour in Asia, tennis will be on at almost any hour of the day, with the men’s events taking place in Europe (Metz, France) and North American (San Diego).
Our selection for Monday’s action among the men’s events comes from the latter, as a pair of Challenger Tour guys in Constant Lestienne and Brandon Holt have an excellent opportunity to pick up a main draw ATP Tour level win when they square off.

After a red-hot summer on hard courts at the Challenger Tour level (three titles and a fourth final since Wimbledon), Lestienne has seen his ranking jump into the top-80 in the world. His reward? Direct entry into the main draw of an ATP Tour main draw.
With an extremely consistent game from the baseline and excellent variety, Lestienne isn’t the kind of player that is going to beat you with brute force, but he still has plenty of different ways to win points.
He also matches up well with Holt, who really doesn’t possess a weapon. If you can’t hit through and/or rush Lestienne from the baseline, and also possess less variety, the Frenchman will be free to construct points at will and grind you down.
Holt’s form isn’t exactly inspiring either. While he made a run through qualifiers at the U.S. Open and had what could be the shock result of the fortnight beating his compatriot Taylor Fritz, he hasn’t done a whole heck of a lot on hard courts elsewhere.
Losses to Tung-Lin Wu, Govind Nanda and Liam Broady aren’t the most inspiring results, and even in New York City, Holt needed a third-set tiebreak to beat Alexandre Muller, had to recover from being down a set and a break to Emilio Gomez and required three sets to beat a clay courter in Dimitar Kuzmanov.
I’m not sold on his ability to beat someone who’s game profiles as Lestienne’s does – let alone a guy in the form that Lestienne is in.

In the end, this comes down to a simple overvaluation on Holt, who is seeing more respect than he probably deserves, thanks to his second round run in New York. The combination of beating Fritz, and doing so on a big stage with so many watching has the markets treating that as more than the outlier it appears to be.
I’ll look to take advantage of that and am rather comfortable taking a rather large position backing the veteran Frenchman.
