Andy Murray vs Mikael Ymer Best Bet: Monday, August 1st

Time to turn the calendar to August, and with that, the tour shifts to North America and the hard court swing leading into the US Open.

After the third-set record of July, the move to August is a welcome one. To open up the action this month, it’s a match between Andy Murray and Mikael Ymer on the hard courts of Washington.

Murray has looked much better the last few months, and on medium to medium-quick courts, will look to keep that momentum going as he takes on Ymer.

Andy Murray vs Mikael Ymer Preview

Monday, August 1st, 21:30 UK Time

After a strong grass season that culminated in a disappointing loss to John Isner in the second round at Wimbledon, it’s time for the summer hard court season for Murray, who’s vaulted himself back inside the world’s top-50.

He has a decent matchup in the first round, taking on Ymer, who doesn’t really possess the biggest game to trouble his incredible return of serve.

With the quicker courts helping his own service game, Murray will be happy playing on the relatively quick courts in Washington.

He possesses the bigger game, has an advantage of well over 100 points in hard-court elo ratings and while his break rate is “only” 21% on hard courts in 2022, a mark around 20% is nothing to sneeze at. Murray has played his fair share of big, tall servers this seasons, which keeps that number down (Reilly Opelka, Alexander Bublik x2, Felix Auger Aliassime, Jannik Sinner to name a few).

With Ymer not able to generate nearly as many free points with his serve, and not able to hit through the incredible defences of Murray, we should see a rather straightforward match.

Andy Murray vs Mikael Ymer Best Bet

I have no issues backing Murray in a few different capacities to take care of business in routine fashion to open his hard-court summer in Washington.

From statistical advantages, to an ideal opponent in style and some strong form through grass season, Murray has all the advantages I’m looking for when playing a favourite handicap on the ATP Tour.
