Serbian native Nina Stojanovic gained entry to the WTA125 Hamburg Open Challenger under protected ranked status, and she’ll land a first-round battle with German noma Akugue on Monday.
Stojanovic enters the German Republic ranked 656th in the world and the 28-year-old from Belgrade hasn’t been seen playing much tennis in 2024.
Noma Noha Akugue is ranked 272md on tour, and the young Nigerian is a slight favorite to reach the second round in her native Germany.
EJ Garr’s Nina Stojanović vs Noma Akugue prediction features odds at -110 for this first-round clash so check it out below.

The first thing to notice is the 656! We know I don’t put much stock in the rankings but Stojanovic plays in extremely low-level events in the WTA25 and WTA15 range.
Gaining a protected ranking to skip qualifying made Stojonavic’s life a little easier but I am not convinced that the Serbian can win one match in the Hamburg Open. The line setters are making this a coin-flip situation placing the line at about -110 for either to advance to the second round.
If I have to flip my coin I will call it heads up on the 20-year-old Nigerian who calls Germany home. Akugue pushed Muchova to three sets in the round of eight in Palermo, but the south-paw can present issues for anyone who isn’t used to playing lefties.
The biggest factor for me is Akugue’s experience in Hamburg, as her appearance here last year was the first WTA250-level entry of her career.
All Akugue did here last year was make a magical run to the finals including wins over Martina Trevisan and Diana Shnaider. Noma was a big underdog against Arantxa Rus and forced a second-set tie-break albeit the loss with a runners-up trophy..
Akugue will take advantage of a second chance in Hamburg and the win will push the German native to the second round to face Olga Danilovic.
With the Olympics still in Paris, we can assume that Stojanvic is happy for her then Mixed Doubles partner at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Stojjanvic and Olympic Gold Medalist Novak Djokovic were partners in Tokyo but a fourth-place finish left them just off the podium. (Djokovic completed the Golden Slam this weekend)
Another major reason for the ranking at 656 is the limited time on the court over the last two campaigns. Stojanovic only played 12 matches in 2023 and has only competed in 10 this season, although the 7 – 1 record on clay looks good on paper.
Nina ran off five straight wins at the Kursumlijska Banja 2 WTA35 event in June earning her third career title on clay.
Noma Noha Akugue is of Nigerian descent but was born and raised in Germany.
With a 14 – 13 record on clay this year, Akugue has compiled a 63 – 39 record on clay over the last three campaigns but is in jeopardy of having a positive record at 18 – 21 combined surfaces in 2024.
A little no-name like Noma Noha Akugue had started her WTA250 career with a run to the finals in Hamburg last season. Returning to the scene, Akugue is 4 – 1 at this venue and looking to start another run filled with upsets and surprises.
This will be the first meeting between Stojanovic and Akugue on any surface.
