We have a coinflip situation as Olga Danilovic and Anca Alexia Todoni battle in the first round of the biggest grass event on tour. Big money, big reputations, and big disappointments will come over the next two weeks, and Danilovic has already tasted defeat at Wimbledon.
As the lucky loser, when Elisabetta Cocciaretto announced she would not be participating in London Olga Danilovic was given a second life in the event. The Serbian native ranked 116th in the world was 2 – 0 in qualifying before getting tripped up by Dalma Galfi but now she gets a second crack in the third Major of the campaign.
I will cut to the chase and tell you that being lucky enough to get back in an event only means you are losing a second time soon enough. That soon enough is today for me, as I see Todoni moving on with a -105 line on the Romanian to progress and likely face Coco Gauff in the next round of Section 8 in the Main Draw.
Todoni dropped only one set from her three qualifying matches to reach the Main Draw, and this is the first year that the Romanian is taking on a run on the grass. Anyone who follows her career knows that clay is her thing and there’s no disputing that.
At 4 – 1 to kick off her young career on grass, Todoni will send Danilovic packing for a second time in this event making her not-so-lucky and a second-time loser at Wimbledon.
We ended the week with a bang, so let’s start the week on the right foot with the expectation that Todoni gets past Danilovic on Monday.
OLGA DANILOVIC RECENT FORM
Olga won her first qualifying match over Stefanini in straight sets and then needed 3-sets to get past Ruzic in her second match at Wimbledon. Danilovic was swept in straights against Galfi who came into this event ranked 128th in the world but now has the chance at new life.
Danilovic is 9 – 9 in her career on the grass, however, that record goes back to 2016 as she has never played more than 5 matches in one season on this surface. Olga didn’t play a match on grass in 2018, 2020, or 2022, and was 3 – 2 last season.
ANCA ALEXIA TODONI RECENT FORM
Todoni excelled in qualifying with three wins and in only her 6th career match on the grass she is listed at -105 to advance in her first appearance in the Major.
Anca Alexia was 15 – 6 on clay and banked the Bari Challenger title making that her sixth career title on the dirt (4 last season).
DANILOVIC VS TODONI HTH – STAT OF THE MATCH
Olga and Anca just met at the French Open in qualifying, and Danilovic earned a 3-set win while making an impressive run to the Final 8 in the clay Major last month.
Danilovic won the first and third sets at 1 & 1 while losing the second frame 6 – 4. And Todoni was borken 7 times.
