I know what you’re thinking. Why am I fading the American who is playing in her hometown?

Let me clear that air and tell you what happened a year ago when Peyton Stearns returned home to Cincinnati to play tennis. Family, friends, and expectations got the best of Stearns who flopped in her debut appearance in Cincy, and let’s not make it out as if the home crowd has any influence on much either.

I have been watching this tournament all week and the one thing you don’t hear in Cincinnati is a crowd making their voices heard. Stearns will be in the same situation with friends and family in the stands and that won’t help her a damn bit toward winning this match today.

I am not one to lay favorites often but when I do, I drink Dos Equis. Wait, I mean that when I do see an overmatched athlete as I do with Stearns against Badosa, the chalk must be put on the board.

Bodosa’s odds to win this match are flying up to -300 and that is a statement from the line setters for the 37th-ranked Spaniard who has picked up her game lately. Paula’s run to a title in Washington, DC was a nice reminder of what we used to see from Badosa when she was ranked around the top 10 in 2021-22.

Peyton Stearns advanced to the quarterfinals in Toronto but let’s not lose track of how she got there. The American’s second and third-round opponents had to walk off the court withdrawing themselves from the event to injuries.

Although Ostapenko was the slight favorite to win that affair, Badosa was peaking and now she has to rebound from a tough loss instead.
