Much like Wang on Monday, Potapova fits the description. She’s got the power to hit with Pliskova and the tall Czech is coming off a title last week in Romania, had to play Monday in the opening round, played for over two hours in that match and should be starting to feel the effects of playing a lot lately and the overnight travel on Sunday night.

One thing Pliskova does have going for her is a hot hand. She’s coming off a fine week in Cluj, having won the Transylvania Open. She put in a slew of impressive performances, but with a bigger event being held at the same time in Abu Dhabi, it should be said that the field wasn’t the strongest and she didn’t really beat all that many strong players en route to lifting the trophy.
Her strong serve played up really well indoors throughout her run, and her big groundstrokes allowed her to hit through most of her competition with relative ease.
Can she continue to rack up the victories? Perhaps. Though I certainly don’t think she wins it 50% of the time given the circumstances.
I’d classify the start to 2024 as shaky for Potapova. Her losses have been pretty poor efforts and even some of her wins have seen patches of sloppy play.
That said, she’s got a lot of talent and plenty of power from the baseline. I’m inclined to give her some credit for a straight-sets win over Martina Trevisan last match too. Not because Trevisan is a great player on hard courts, but because she makes you play a lot of balls and that can be a style that troubles the Russian.
We’ll see if she can use that power and move the ball around the court well enough to exploit a slower mover and potentially fatigued opponent in Pliskova on Tuesday.
Despite being two strong players near the top of the women’s game, the two have yet to play before.
If the elo ratings are to be believed, this one should be a fairly competitive contest, at the very least.
